Basic Function Under supervision, cares for zoo animals and facilities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Feeds, cleans, waters, bathes and grooms domestic and exotic animals as directed Cleans cages using brooms, scrub brushes, shovels, rakes and various chemical disinfectant compounds Performs a wide range of skilled work involving the care of animals Identifies and treats minor injuries and illnesses Maintains detailed, hand-written daily records Provides mentally and physically-enriching activities for animals Provides direction to visitors and answers questions from the public Maintains zoo grounds, including mowing, repairing exhibits and fences, disposing of trash and garbage, painting, and related activities Performs additional duties as assigned Qualifications Knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of administration of a public zoo system Knowledge of the methods, equipment, materials, plants and tools used in zoo operation, maintenance, repair, construction, and landscaping Ability to learn how to capture animals, including the use of nets and tranquilizer guns Ability to handle exposure to extreme temperatures, animal feces, unpleasant odors, and potential safety hazards associated with working with zoo animals Knowledge of operation and maintenance of tractors, movers, leaf blowers, and other light equipment Education and Experience Completion of high school or GED required One year of experience caring for animals or livestock preferred Special Requirements A current Kansas driver\'s license Must be available to work nights, overtime, and weekends Physical Requirements Intense physical effort is required.Individual must be able to sit, stand, walk, carry, push, pull, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, grasp, speak, and listen for extended periods oftime. Working Conditions Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, chemicals, etc. NOTE:Final applicants will submit to a drug screening prior to awarding of job SALARY RANGE:The starting salary for this position is \$12.47 per hour plus benefits.
