Battelle Energy Alliance dba Idaho National Laboratory Fusion Research Scientist in Idaho Falls, Idaho

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Fusion Research Scientist to work in our Nuclear Science & Technology team. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Advanced Test Reactor Complex facility with every Friday off.

This position conducts experimental and analytical work supporting the Fusion Safety Program. Experimental contributions span all areas of experimental activities conducted at the Safety and Tritium Applied Research (STAR) facility with a focus on experimental facilities that investigate tritium behavior in materials (permeation, retention, desorption). This position supports a broad range of exciting projects related to advanced reactor technology and fusion energy. Responsibilities Include:

  • Chosen candidate will conduct research and development activities that advance the state of the art as well as participate in multiple programs.
  • Participation in development of research projects planning by contributing to project planning and review meetings.
  • Assist in the design, assembly, and operation of unique and custom laboratory experiments.
  • Support the operation and interpretation of results from the fusion safety computational capabilities.
  • Meet environmental, health, and safety goals, and perform all work in an environmentally safe and compliant manner.
  • Publishing in peer-reviewed journals and participating in conference activities.

*Minimum Requirements: * * Level 2: Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or materials engineering, chemistry, physics, or related field. * Level 3:Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or materials engineering, chemistry, physics, or related field, plus 2 years of experience. * Hands-on experience with ultra-high vacuum systems, gas analysis, and other laboratory equipment. * Working knowledge of the design and assembly of vacuum systems, gas systems, and data acquisition and controls. * Experience with hydrogen interactions in materials.

Desired Requirements:

  • Experience with irradiated materials and radiological work.
  • Experience with thermal desorption spectroscopy.

*Job Information: *

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 2 - min $75,804 - max $155,496 / Level 3 - min $91,008 - max $186,588. At Idaho National Laboratory, compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
