Job Description

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience

  • Must have performed satisfactorily the duties of a Track Equipment Operator, Track Walker/Inspector, Structural Repairer or Track Repairer for a period of not less than three (3) years.

  • Must be able to successfully qualify for Roadway Protection Certification Level IV within 90 days of being hired and maintain for duration of employment.

Certification/Licensure

  • Roadway Worker Protection (RWP) certification and Motor Vehicle license.

Preferred

  • Experience in responding to track related emergencies in a Transit or Commuter Rail system.

Mission Essential Designation:

  • In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

SUMMARY

Provides emergency response in order to assess and stabilize unforeseen situations while ensuring the safety of WMATA’s patrons and employees. Troubleshoots various emergency conditions in efforts to reduce costly revenue service disruptions by making repairs to safety critical track components. Makes every reasonable effort to restore normal revenue service in a timely manner.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs and documents an inventory of tools and materials at the beginning of each shift.

  • Responds quickly to calls received from MOC dispatching the crew to a specified location and documents timelines.

  • Transports ERT personnel by driving the response vehicle to emergency locations as assigned by the ERT supervisor.

  • Inspects track components in order to determine the appropriate corrective maintenance in efforts to restore normal revenue service in a safe and timely manner. Responds to emergencies ranging from a missing bolt to a cracked rail on aerials, direct fixation, ballasted, yard and/or mainline tracks.

  • Supports the ERT supervisor by confirming third rail power status and establishing the setup of the work location which allows track inspections and track maintenance work to be performed safely based on the nature of the emergency response incident.

  • Performs track maintenance work using prescribed tools for the specific maintenance application associated with the actual response. This includes removing, installing and securing technical track components while exacting tolerances in accordance with WMATA’s Track Standards in order to reduce and/or eliminate any risk factors.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Attends all safety briefings conducted by the Emergency Response Team (ERT) supervisor and scheduled training to include Roadway Worker Protection Certification in order to maintain proper safety compliance.

  • Performs and repair work in subways, on aerials and on ballasted track during revenue service and single track operations.
