HURRICANE VALLEY FIRE SPECIAL SERVICE DIST Seasonal Wildland Firefighter I in HURRICANE, Utah

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision from the Wildland Captain or Wildland Firefighter Lead when assigned, provides direct services, individually and as a member of a firefighting team, in the suppression and control of fires, wildfire mitigation, emergency response preparation, and provides other kinds of emergency assistance to the public as required.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

·         Responds to wildland fires within the District, which may include dispatches when off-duty.

·         Responds to wildfire deployments nationally which typically last up to 16 days with the possibility of extension.

·         Conduct fuel mitigation projects around the District, to include chainsaw, chipping and piling operations.

·         Cleans, inspects and maintains apparatus, equipment, and station.

·         Participates in drills and frequent training sessions to maintain basic wildland firefighting skills.

·         Performs under emergency conditions which may require strenuous exertion in the face of such challenges as to include smoke, high temperatures, steep terrain, and strenuous labor.

·         Performs daily physical training and participates in District physical testing.

·         Utilizes District computer system for record keeping, pre-incident planning and other job-related functions.

·         Operates a variety of firefighting equipment in a broad range of environments.  

·         May be assigned to drive and operate fire apparatus to and on the scene of emergencies.

·         Leads Squad/small crew on various assignments to include suppression, mop-up, mitigation, patrolling, physical fitness, training, etc.

·         Assists with paperwork, record keeping and other communications.

·         Trains and mentors FFT2s and other firefighters.

·         Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATES

·         Must be 18 years of age or older.

·         All employees of the District are expected to uphold and exhibit the District's Code of Conduct, District and employee values.

·         Pass a criminal history background check.

·         Pre-employment drug screen.

·         Graduation from High School or GED

·         You must possess a valid Utah Driver's License.

·         NWCG Firefighter I qualification

·         S-290, Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior

·         S-212, Wildland Fire Chain Saws

·         S-211, Portable Pumps and Water Use

·         Must complete an Arduous Work Capacity Test

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABIL ITIES

Working knowledge of

o   The goals and objectives of the District's fire control program.

o   Effective techniques and methods of fire suppression and control.

o   Effective operation of policies and procedures established for the District.

o   Emergency medical procedures.

Skills in

o   The operation of the apparatus to be driven.

o   Methods and techniques of basic wildland firefighting.

o   Basic maintenance of equipment, apparatus, and station.

Ability to

o   Follow written and verbal instructions.

o   Communicate in a written and verbal manner.

o   Ability to exercise appropriate safety tactics in firefighting and medical emergencies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

·         While performing the duties of this job, the employee is f equently required to sit, talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist, or jump; and taste or smell.  

·         The employee must frequently lift and/or move more than 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

·         Job duties require moderate to heavy physical exertion; constant seeing and hearing; constant attendance; must be able to wear and work in breathing apparatus. 

·         Requires great muscular exertion, stooping, kneeling, climbing and balancing.

·         Requires the ability to pack wildland fire packs and equipment for great distances, strenuous terrain and through extreme conditions to include hot, cold, wet, dry, and windy weather.

·         Great mental pressure and fatigue exist during an average day due to exposure to difficult situations, contact with the public and deadlines; exposure to emergency situations that involve dangerous and disagreeable conditions including smoke, heights, fire, stress, hazardous materials, communicable diseases, excessive noise, fumes, heat, cold, water, emergency driving, etc. 

·          A moderate amount of overtime hours may be required, around 700-1000 hours per season

·         Typically work periods are 10 hours in length while off assignment, but can exceed 16 hours while on assignment

·         I likely call back on days off, especially between April 1 and November 1.

·         Will be required to travel away from home for several days at a time, typically up to 16 days at a time and sometimes longer. Days away from home may exceed 80 nights per year*.  Seasonal employees are subject to a maximum of 1870 hours per year. *

·         While deployed, it may be required to sleep on the ground, go for extended periods without cell phone service and live in less-than-ideal conditions.

·         This position will remain (probationary) during the entirety of the job offer.
