Kelly Services Senior Coatings Chemist in Houston, Texas

Kelly Science & Clinical is currently recruiting candidates for a Senior Coatings Chemist of Infrastructure Coatings (IC) who will be a member of our client’s Liquid R&D Laboratories in Houston, TX formulating coatings technologies to support the needs of their customer base. The IC group services the Performance, Polymer Flooring, Insulative, Marine, and Fire Protection Coatings markets.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to safety standards and maintain a clean and safe work area

  • Formulate coatings based on established guidelines in collaboration with colleagues

  • Work daily at the bench to make paint samples, evaluate the samples for performance, and identify the adjustments necessary to meet customer requirements

  • Ensure that all projects are well documented in our stage gate innovation process and meeting defined stage gate timelines

  • Support the commercial aspect of the business by researching and testing alternative and back-up raw materials

  • Interpretation of test data, preparing reports and presentations for both internal and external customers

  • Assist Technical Service, Sales, and Production with field trials of new products, as well as specific customer projects including sample preparation testing and other customer service activities

  • Support the successful scale-up of products from laboratory to production

  • Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks and records

  • Monitor current literature, trends, and patent activity on coating technology

  • Solve customer problems in the areas of appearance, workability, color, and film performance

  • Provide team support by encouraging collaboration and providing suggestions/resources to overcome obstacles

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or related scientific/technical discipline

  • 7-15 years of experience as a chemist in coatings development and in support of a production facility

  • Epoxy and Urethane coatings chemistry expertise preferred

  • Must possess a successful history in formulating innovative products through product introduction in the field

  • Supervisory experience in a laboratory setting

  • Ability to create collaborative relationships with raw material suppliers

  • Project management skills. Able to balance competing priorities, complex situations, and tight deadlines

  • Ability to lead and communicate orally, in written documents, and in formal presentations when required

  • Problem analysis and problem resolution experience

  • Direct Hire + Full Benefits

  • Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm

  • Salary dependent upon level of education and experience
