Job Summary and Qualifications

This Job Description for the Staff RN in the Emergency Department provides criteria for the evaluation of the Registered Nurse in the Staff RN position. The Staff RN assigned to the Free-Standing Emergency Department cares for patients including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.

What you will do in this role:

  • Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for assigned patient

  • Responsible for meeting the Standards of Practice for the Emergency Department and managing all assigned personnel, supplies and equipment.

  • Participates in activities to plan, measure, assess and improve the quality of patient care.

  • Routinely provides triage assessment for patients presenting for treatment.

  • Routinely performs venipunctures for obtaining specimens for lab tests.

  • Routinely provides intervention in emergency, life-threatening situations.

  • Assumes the responsibility of charging the department, as needed.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing.

  • Education requirements appropriate for meeting age-specific needs of patients admitted to the Emergency Department, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.

  • Current Texas licensure with the State Board of Nurse Examiners

  • Current BCLS certification from the American Heart Association required.

  • Demonstrated current clinical competence, as outlined in the appropriate orientation checklist.

  • Medication Test score of 80% or better.

  • Maintains current clinical competence via Annual Skills Checklist

  • EKG Certification or successful challenge of EKG Exam.

  • ACLS and PALS certification within six months of employment.

  • TNCC certification required within 18 months of employment.

  • CEN certification encouraged.

  • NIHSS certification within 6 months of hire, unless currently certified then needs to be maintained.

  • Two acute stroke educational activities attended annually
