MD Anderson Cancer Center Phlebotomist - CTRC Research in Houston, Texas

The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

The primary purpose of the Phlebotomist position is to collect time sensitive research specimens, including but not limited to blood and urine, within the CTRC Laboratory. Also, performs laboratory assignments in the CTRC, and other MDACC designated inpatient and outpatient hospital units, clinics or satellite collection sites.

Shift Timing- 10:00am-6:30pm

KEY FUNCTIONS

1. Phlebotomy/Processing (50%)

• Demonstrates competency in various phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture, capillary puncture, central venous catheter blood collection, hair follicle and body fluid collection, isolation room procedures, and age-specific skills.

• Accurately enters and records required data regarding collections in logs, labels, requisitions, and computer systems, ensuring all information is complete for research and billing purposes.

• Maintains knowledge of all relevant policies and protocols for the accurate and timely collection, processing, shipping, and storage of research samples.

• Consistently meets productivity standards and completes assignments independently while assisting with problem-solving as needed.

• Participates in continuing education programs to stay current with best practices and industry standards.

2. Quality Assurance (25%)

• Ensures all samples are collected, documented accurately, and reviewed for completeness before storage or disposal, adhering to applicable policies, procedures, and protocols.

• Performs all phlebotomy procedures according to the section's manual, accurately identifying patients and collecting the correct specimens while maintaining specimen integrity through timely collection and transportation.

• Completes and files electronic and paper records accurately, and documents protocol-mandated tasks, reasons for non-performance, or variances honestly.

• Requests assistance when competing priorities interfere with accurate and complete sample collection, and assists co-workers as needed.

• Complies with all JCAHO patient safety requirements, guidelines for handling cytotoxic agents and biological hazards, and other regulatory requirements, including hand washing and the proper use of personal protective equipment, and seeks clarification from supervisors when necessary.

3. Safety and Customer Service (25%)

• Complies with all safety policies, assisting in ensuring a safe environment for patients, co-workers, and visitors, and using equipment and supplies safely.

• Wears protective attire and personal protective equipment according to regulatory, institutional, and divisional requirements, and participates in all required safety training.

• Manages customer service and peer interactions with tact and diplomacy, actively seeking to resolve issues with internal and external customers and contacts.

• Documents in a manner consistent with information given to the subject/patient, ensuring accuracy and completeness.

• Exhibits teamwork in performing clinical trial tasks and duties, supporting colleagues as needed.

4. Other Duties as Assigned

Education

Required High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred : Associate's degree from a Medical Laboratory Technician Program or completion of a specialized phlebotomy training program.

Experience

Required: Completion of a MD Anderson phlebotomy internship or six months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory. With preferred education, only three months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory required.
