Position Description

KINDER MORGAN

Kinder Morgan is one of the largest energy infrastructure companies in North America. We own an interest in or operate approximately 79,000 miles of pipelines and 139 terminals. Our pipelines transport natural gas, gasoline, crude oil, carbon dioxide (CO2) and more. Our terminals store and handle renewable fuels, petroleum products, chemicals, vegetable oils and other products.

We are a market leader in each of our businesses – Natural Gas Pipelines, Products Pipelines, CO2, and Terminals. We have an unparalleled, large footprint of diversified and strategically located assets that are core to North American energy infrastructure and help deliver needed energy products to high-demand markets.

BUSINESS UNIT: NATURAL GAS PIPELINES

With approximately 67,000 miles of natural gas pipelines, Kinder Morgan owns an interest in or operates the largest natural gas network in North America. We serve the major consuming markets of the United States, and our pipelines transport approximately 40 percent of the natural gas consumed in the U.S. Our pipelines are connected to every important natural gas resource play and supply area, including the Eagle Ford, Marcellus, Bakken, Utica, Uinta Permian, Haynesville, Fayetteville and Barnett.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Manage a team of Engineers by leading, managing, monitoring, reviewing, improving, and assisting with their efforts in the areas of Capacity Planning, Operations Planning and System Design. This team supports four Kinder Morgan (KM) interstate natural gas transmission pipeline and storage assets: Tennessee Gas Pipeline, Kinder Morgan Louisiana Pipeline, Arlington Storage and Stagecoach Pipeline and Storage. This team highly utilizes hydraulic pipeline simulation tools and frequently coordinates with the following internal customers: Marketing, Business Development, Gas Control, Transportation Contracts and Scheduling, Pipeline Operations, Engineering, Project Management (PM), Rates, Regulatory, EHS-Air Permitting and Information Technology.

Position Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain seasonal pipeline hydraulic models, capturing all facility capabilities and limitations as authorized by FERC, PHMSA and the EPA air permits.

  • Determine the amount of unsubscribed firm capacity for transportation and storage.

  • Post unsubscribed firm transportation and storage capacity to the Electronic Bulletin Board (EBB) in compliance with pipeline Tariffs and FERC NAESB regulations.

  • Approve capacity availability for each firm transportation or storage contract.

  • Determine the operational capacity impact of taking facilities out of service for maintenance and construction activities.

  • Coordination with Gas Control maintenance planner to assist with scheduling overlapping facility outages to help minimize impact and with reporting of anticipated capacity impact on the EBB.

  • Perform operational analysis for Gas Control and Operations to help determine optimal operating facility configurations through use of steady state and transient pipeline simulation tools.

  • Query historical operating data for use in operational analysis and design of new facilities.

  • Work with the Marketing teams to understand most valuable portions of the pipeline systems and work with the team of engineers to maximize capacity through those areas.

  • Determine the most cost-effective addition of facilities to meet incremental needs of potential customers and provide rough cost estimates using PM developed conceptual estimating tools for initial discussions.

  • Coordinate with Commercial, Engineering, Gas Control and Regulatory personnel throughout the life cycle of a facility expansion project, updating hydraulic studies and data analysis as needed.

  • Review historical processes with their peers within the KM interstate groups and determine most efficient, “Work Smart” best practices.

The preferred education and experience for this position is as follows:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline (Mechanical, Civil, Chemical or Electrical) with emphasis on fluid flow dynamics and/or thermodynamics.

  • Related work experience in the oil and gas industry to include at least one of the following:

  • Experience with and knowledge of the characteristics of compressible fluids and simulations of flow dynamics.

  • Experience with and knowledge of computer modeling of compression and fluid flow in pipelines.

  • Experience with the design, operation, maintenance and/or capital project support of natural gas compression facilities such as centrifugal and reciprocating compression, metering/regulation and pipeline facilities.

  • Familiarity with relevant design codes such as 49 CFR Part 192.

  • Familiarity with the commercial aspects of the FERC regulated natural gas transmission industry.

  • Other desirable requirements for the position:

  • Creative thinking.

  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.

  • Experience using hydraulic simulations packages such as DNV Synergi Gas and/or NextGen/WinFlow/WinTran to model natural gas pipeline systems.

  • Experience managing engineers.

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office proficiency, VBA, SQL, Python/scripting software, Google Earth, GIS, SCADA and the ability to learn other programs quickly.
