Duties

Function as a technical specialist in a lead substation design role encompassing distribution, subtransmission and transmission level voltage classes. Apply advanced engineering techniques and analyses for problems and methods. Expand knowledge and skill set in area of discipline. Expand knowledge in other disciplines and/or functional areas. Lead/train other engineers and technicians and interface directly with clients. Lead the overall execution and quality of substation projects within a team environment. Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables. Perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection. Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements. Plan and conduct independent evaluation, selection and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. Review lower-level engineering work or assignments. Oversee collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering work. Lead smaller production teams. Serve as the responsible charge for a project. Collaborate with the client and other electrical and civil engineers at Black & Veatch. Perform QA (Quality Assurance) checking and/or generate wiring and schematic diagrams for relaying panels, SCADA drawings, one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, panel front views, AC/DC diagrams, electrical plan views, electrical section views, conduit/raceway plans, cable charts, grounding plans and bill of materials. Perform relay coordination, program relay settings and provide protection narrative and relay manuals for substation. Serve as the responsible engineer performing grounding analysis and hazard mitigation for substations. Perform QA and/or generate various calculations, such as AC & DC, bus loading, voltage drop, equipment sizing, conductor rating, and lightning. Confer with engineers, clients, or others to discuss existing or potential engineering projects or products. Serve as the responsible engineer, develop recommendations and specifications for equipment and/or material selection, review shop drawings, vendor quotes, perform bid evaluations, develop construction release and startup procedure documents. Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers on less complex projects. Oversee Electrical Engineers. No hire/fire authority. Requirements

Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or related discipline, plus three years of related experience, or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or related discipline, plus five years of related experience. Must have a PE license. Related experience must include: high-voltage substation design (minimum of 34.5kV); creating and reviewing project schedules and budgets; performing quality analysis and quality control responsibilities; and designing and interpreting one lines, three lines, schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, and physical substation drawings (i.e. plan views, section cuts, grounding, conduit, cable schedule, bill of materials, etc). Must have experience performing Relay Settings & coordination, Power System studies, and fault analysis and grounding studies. Must have experience performing Load Flow and Short Circuit Studies. Must have experience in performing Transmission and System Analysis Studies. Must have experience in performing studies including Transmission Interconnection Studies, Reactive Power Compensation, Short Circuit (Fault) Analysis, and Circuit Breaker Rating Analysis. Must have experience performing grounding studies and hazard mitigation on CDEGS and WinIGS software. Must have prior experience with Software Products for Load Flow and Stability Analysis (PSS/E, PSLF, PSCAD, TARA), Short Circuit, and Relay Coordination (Aspen Oneliner, ETAP and PSS CAPE). Must have experience working with substation indoor and outdoor design. Must have previous experience working with multinational teams. Must have experience working with civil and construction engineers, construction support, internal and external client co-ordination, and procurement of major electrical equipment. Must have experience with cost estimation and analyzed improvements in QA/QC of the design package. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and PDF writing software such as Bluebeam Revu, Adobe, or related. Must have experience with applicable codes and standards for substation projects, including NESC, NEC, and IEEE. Telecommuting is permissible within a reasonable commuting distance from the Houston, Texas Black and Veatch Office. National travel required up to 10% of the time. Must have good written and verbal communications skills in English.
