The Director- Legal Operations, Data & Analytics reports to the Chief of Staff & Managing Director, Legal Operations. The role is pivotal in advancing technology processes, driving efficiencies, enabling data-driven decision-making through analytics and responsible for managing the Legal Matter Management and Information Governance teams.
This role will be based onsite at our Houston, TX HQ location in West Houston.
Responsibilities May Include
Lead the Legal Matter Management function including service of process, matter administration, legal spend, vendor relationships and the litigation management process.
Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) measuring the Legal Department’s strategic performance, operational efficiency and contribution to Company priorities.
Utilize advanced technologies to analyze data, identify trends, and provide reporting/metrics that inform data-driven decisions and enhanced results.
Manage Outside Counsel Program including rates negotiation, alternative fee arrangements, establishing benchmarking baselines, administering RFP platform and preferred firm selection process, and being the central point of contact for building firm relationships to improve the quality of outside legal representation.
Administer and continually refine the Outside Counsel Retention Guidelines and legal invoice review process.
Oversee Information Governance policies, enterprise-wide program and knowledge sharing management tools and processes.
Liaison to advance Legal Operations initiatives in collaboration with business units and corporate functions companywide.
Primarily responsible for identifying and implementing technology solutions that streamline Legal processes, improve efficiency, and enhance the overall effectiveness and work productivity of the Department.
Advise on and advance strategic human capital management priorities and drive appropriate resourcing, employee growth and succession readiness.
Be an effective, trusted people leader by motivating, developing and driving impactful performance of a team of five functional experts.
Promote the Legal Department’s mission by refining, promoting and executing on the Department’s short and long-term operations plan.
Benchmark both internally and externally to stay on top of current trends, best practices and provide view into industry performance.
Required Qualifications
Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
Bachelor’s degree in business administration, information technology, mathematics, engineering, data analytics, or a legal-related field
10 or more years of experience in corporate, vendor, law firm or consulting fields demonstrating legal operations expertise
5 or more years of supervisory/managerial experience
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree associated with law, business, or information technology
Highly developed understanding of the Legal Operations disciplines and record of proven results and leadership
Extensive understanding and implementation of analytics to bring workflow efficiencies and value-added technologies into Department
Functional proficiency in matter management applications including, but not limited to, Passport
Proficiency in using advanced analytical tools and techniques
Developed understanding of information governance principles, best practices, compliance requirements and records management programs
Developed user in Microsoft Office products – Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, SQL
Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication and critical thinking skills
Ability to develop concise process and end-user documentation
Aptitude to deliver creative and sustainable business solutions
Competence to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
Proficiency to prioritize tasks, adapt to change and assess big picture objectives
Ability to take a leadership role on projects and efficiently manage resources
Proven experience with managing multiple projects and work teams simultaneously
Ability to easily and effectively communicate with external partners, attorneys, paralegals, Legal Management and internal business clients, and collaborate with employees in different departments and of varying degrees of seniority
Ability to prepare and present clear, concise and persuasive oral/written opinions, reports, correspondence and presentations
Appropriate use of good judgement, discretion and appreciation for working with confidential and sensitive information
Experience with AI tools and large language models is a plus
