Summary The primary purpose of this position is to maintain, troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, and modify a variety of heavy duty vehicles and mobile equipment which have utility systems or special hydraulic; pneumatic, mechanical, electrical. or electronic systems, features, or controls designed for such purposes as construction, combat1 earth moving1 firefighting, and comparable industrial or special applications. Responsibilities Troubleshoots hard-to-locate problems, identifies defects and causes of mechanical problems to determine type and extent of necessary repairs to a variety of heavy mobile vehicles and equipment. Repairs, overhauls, and rebuilds a variety of heavy mobile equipment/vehicles. Conducts functional and performance tests using a wide variety of test procedures and equipment on completed work assignments. Utilizes safety practice, and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains safe and clean work environment. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5800 Transportation/Mobile Equipment Maintenance Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of a WG-5803 HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: I. Knowledge of heavy mobile equipment assembly, installation, and repair, i.e., bulldozers, road graders, power shovels, mobile cranes, heavy combat equipment and missile transporters. 2. Knowledge of technical practice, in order to repair/overhaul major systems, i.e., diesel, multi-fuel, and gasoline engines, automatic and manual transmissions multi-gear assemblies, and a variety of positioning systems. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures. 3. Skill in using measuring instruments and test equipment such as engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, vacuum and fuel pump testers injector testers ignition timers, tachometers ammeters, and ohmmeters. Skill in troubleshooting mechanical problems, analyzing malfunctions, and determining the extent of repairs necessary. 4. Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, and modify a variety of heavy mobile vehicles and equipment without more than normal supervision. 5. Ability to interpret instructions, technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and similar guides to make repairs and modifications. 6. Ability to use and maintain hand and/or power tools and equipment required to do the work of heavy mobile equipment mechanic. Physical Effort Work-sin tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching, Works on top of, under, and in tight compartments, performing strenuous work while in cramped or awkward position. Frequently lifts and conies items unassisted weighing up to 40 pounds and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning pants, assemblies, and equipment. Frequently lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. May work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights. Working Conditions Works both inside and outside. When inside, is frequently exposed drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, is exposed to inclement weather conditions. Worker is exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, heat, and fumes. Worker is subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves respirators and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and must be worn for long periods of time. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
