REPORTS TO
Director of Adult, Early Childhood and Outreach Education
Position Purpose Under the general supervision of the administrator, teach or instruct out-of-school youths and adults in remedial education classes, preparatory classes for the High School Equivalency test, literacy, or English as a Second Language. Teaching may or may not take place in a traditional educational institution. Essential Functions
· Develops and administers education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
· Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs, abilities, and interests.
· Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws or administrative policies.
· Assign and grade class work and homework.
· Prepare and administer written, oral, and performance tests, and issue grades in accordance with performance.
· Conduct classes, workshops, and demonstrations to teach principles, techniques, or methods in subjects such as basic English language skills, life skills, and workforce entry skills.
· Observe and evaluate students' work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement.
· Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students.
· Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
· Guide and counsel students with adjustment or academic problems, or special academic interests.
· Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
· Observe students to determine qualifications, limitations, abilities, interests, and other individual characteristics.
· Prepare objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum guidelines or requirements of states and schools.
· Register, orient, and assess new students according to standards and procedures.
· Review instructional content, methods, and student evaluations to assess strengths and weaknesses, and to develop recommendations for course revision, development, or elimination.
· Provide information, guidance, and preparation for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) examination.
· Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.
· Prepare students for further education by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.
· Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
Additional Duties
· Performs other related tasks as assigned by the administrator and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment
· Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
Travel Requirements
· Travels to school district buildings, classroom locations and professional meetings as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
· Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, word denotations and connotations, spelling, literature and other content areas taught.
· Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
· Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
· Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
· Ability to organize and coordinate work.
· Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
· Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
· Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
· Works in standard office and school building environments.
Certification/License:
· New York State Certification as an Adult Education Teacher or New York State Certification in any field.
· Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
Education:
· Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
· Masters Degree in related area preferred.
Experience
· Successful prior teaching experiences a plus.
