Description

We are offering an exciting opportunity for a Controller located in HAYWARD, California, 94545, United States. The selected candidate will be an integral part of our team, overseeing high-level accounting functions and supervising processes in a nonprofit and/or higher education industry setting. The role will involve working with various accounting software systems and handling financial statement preparation, monthly close, and audits.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Owns the chart of accounts, ensuring that all systems and workflows are updated when changes are made

  • Maintains the accounting and budgeting software

  • Supports the CFO in the annual budget and the annual reforecast processes by gathering and entering data, and preparing analysis as directed

  • Trains department managers in the use of budgeting software

  • Works with department managers to understand and document monthly budget variances

  • Ensures that appropriate data capture and reporting is in place as college expands to new campuses

  • Serves as point of contact and coordination for external auditors

  • Provides leadership, training and oversight to two Accountants, the Accounts Payable Clerk and the Accounts Receivable Coordinator

  • Manages the department’s compliance calendar and ensures timely submission of all required external filings (e.g., IPEDS, WASC-SUSC OMB 133-A, etc.)

  • Serves as point person for annual insurance renewals, providing financial and operational data as needed

  • Cross-trains and serves as backup for the Accountant role

  • Performs confidential, technical and complex duties

  • Works confidentially with discretion on privileged and sensitive information

  • Prepares ad-hoc financial analysis and reporting as requested

  • Handles inquiries from within and without the department in the absence of the CFO

  • Collaborates with various internal departments to support overall department and college goals and objectives

    Requirements

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Accounting

  • Active CPA license preferred.

  • Public accounting experience strongly preferred.

  • Proficient in GAAP accounting; stays current on new accounting pronouncements.

  • Minimum 10 years of general accounting experience; 5 years in a similar position, nonprofits and/or higher education is a plus

  • Minimum 5 years supervisory experience, preferably of an accounting team

  • Strong working knowledge of AP & AR

  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills

  • Experienced in financial analysis and possessing deep understanding of accounting concepts

  • Solid experience with monthly close, audits, and financial statement preparation

  • Strong knowledge of MS Excel and Word.

  • Strong knowledge of accounting software, Great Plains a plus.

  • Familiarity with budgeting software, Dynamic Budgets and/or Vena Solutions a plus.

  • Extremely detail-oriented with attention to accuracy and efficiency.

  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.

  • Works well in a fast-paced environment with minimum supervision.

  • Team player with a strong work ethic; willing to roll up their sleeves and do whatever is needed to get the job done

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Strong communication skills with ability to anticipate needs and manage expectations.
