Job Summary

The University of Southern Mississippi invites applicants for a full-time, nine-month tenure-track faculty position in the School of Accountancy to begin in August 2024. The position is based on the Hattiesburg campus (Hattiesburg, MS). We are multi-site university; therefore, the candidate may be required to teach at the Gulf Park campus (Long Beach, MS) and/or teach online/hybrid courses using various forms of technology.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Duties and responsibilities of this position include excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in accounting, conducting scholarly research that results in articles published in high-quality, peer-reviewed accounting journals, and service to the School of Accountancy, College of Business and Economic Development, university, and the academy.

  • Teaching duties will be in our undergraduate BSBA accounting program with the possibility of also teaching in our MPA and/or MBA programs. Our specific instructional needs are in the areas of financial accounting and data analytics.

  • The individual hired will also be expected to teach in a secondary area such as taxation, auditing, or ethics.Classes will be assigned based on the School's needs and efforts will be made to find for the faculty member to teach in his/her special areas of expertise. Classes may be on-campus, online, or hybrid.

  • The individual selected must demonstrate a collegial and team-oriented persona. School of Accountancy faculty are actively engaged in scholarly, professional, and pedagogical research to extend the knowledge boundaries of the accounting discipline while maintaining currency of their academic/professional qualifications and the School's curriculum. The successful candidate must be devoted to teaching excellence at the graduate and undergraduate level and must demonstrate a commitment to student success. All faculty are also required to be actively engaged in our assurance of learning processes.

  • The School of Accountancy holds separate AACSB accreditation. All faculty in the School are required to contribute to the maintenance of separate AACSB accreditation.

Minimum Qualifications

An earned doctorate (or ABD*) in Accounting or other appropriate related field from an AACSB accredited institution. Meet the requirements of a scholarly academic in accounting for AACSB accreditation purposes. For candidates with prior employment in higher education, evidence of excellence in collegiate teaching and institutional/professional service is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Conduct research leading to publications in high-quality, peer-reviewed accounting journals

  • Achievement in scholarship, such as journal articles and presentations at academic conferences

  • Deliver high-quality undergraduate and graduate courses in a face-to-face, online, and hybrid format and a commitment to student learning

  • Maintain currency in the individual’s area of expertise within the accounting discipline and bring that knowledge into the classroom

  • Become a fully engaged member of the faculty working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment, which includes service to the school, college, university, and profession

  • Active participation in maintaining the currency of the curriculum and in assessment of learning

  • A passion for teaching, engaging with students and student clubs, and mentoring students

  • The ability and willingness to engage with the professional accounting and business community

  • A commitment to continuous improvement in teaching, research, and service

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in public or corporate accounting. Professional certification (CPA, CMA, etc.). Experience in teaching hybrid/flipped/online classes, and evidence of excellence in scholarly research.

*ABD applicants must have completed all doctoral course requirements and qualifying exams and must persuasively demonstrate that all degree requirements will be completed before the start of the position.
