The Senior Underwriting Portfolio Risk Analyst has overall responsibility to manage, monitor, expand, and optimize HSB’s portfolio products for assigned largest, critical Client Company relationships, with a focus on achieving Profit and Growth targets. This role supports a key strategic initiative, to profitably grow our business acting as a catalyst to new product implementations and performance management of existing client companies.

The Senior Underwriting Portfolio Risk Analyst is responsible for acting as a thought leader with Clients, bringing innovative solutions utilizing HSB’s vast resources of data, products & services. Working to tactically deploy HSB’s capabilities to optimize and enhance our client partnerships.

Working closely with Product Managers and the Underwriting Lead, the Senior Underwriting Portfolio Risk Analyst will deploy creative approaches for data analysis (including but not limited to diagnostic and predictive analytics) to understand and optimize product performance. These analytical approaches are used to design surgical strategies for corrective action to ensure rate adequacy, appropriate price segmentation & detection of leading loss trends. This includes analyzing claims, engineering, expenses, exposure data/profile shifts, pure premium trends & 3rd party exposure data.

The Senior Underwriting Portfolio Risk Analyst is responsible for delivering powerful client presentations (externally) to communicate financial results, data analysis, rate analysis & emerging loss trends. The Senior Underwriting Portfolio Risk Analyst is the technical expert for both our Client and Client Integration Team.

A Senior Underwriting Portfolio Risk Analyst has underwriting binding authority to independently make underwriting decisions that drive their assigned portfolio’s financial results, subsequently impacting the business’ P&L.

The Senior Underwriting Portfolio Risk Analyst has product expertise for all HSB Treaty products with a focus on supporting the products, services and enhancements for each product. This is accomplished by demonstrating a deep understanding of coverage and communicating the value of our products to existing clients and prospective clients.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors or equivalent work experience is required

  • 7+ years of P&C insurance/reinsurance experience is required;

  • 5+ years in Underwriting preferred

  • Demonstrated understanding of commercial and personal lines insurance and reinsurance coverage, concepts, principles, exposures and processes to drive profitable results

  • Demonstrated ability to translate large data analysis into actionable decisions

  • Demonstrated understanding of rate development (pure premium), price segmentation & detecting leading loss trends

  • Past experience with responsibility for achieving profit and growth targets for a book a business.

  • Demonstrated experience with negotiation and conflict resolution

  • Exhibited ability to develop creative and unique solutions

  • HSB Product knowledge and Previous Experience and familiarity with HSB is desired

  • Financial Statement (Business Finance) knowledge and analysis

  • General insurance/reinsurance industry knowledge

  • Presentation Skills

  • HSB Product knowledge

  • Organization and time management skills

  • Consultative and Strategic negotiation skills

  • Strong project management skills to manage multiple concurrent projects and issues.

  • PC skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, and Word)

  • Detail Oriented

  • Action oriented with strong analytical, Actuarial skills, Statistical analysis, innovation and persuasion skills to influence change

  • Naturally curious and inquisitive to identify issues and solve problems. Resourceful in order to research issues, assemble support, and recommend creative solutions to underwriting issues
