The Hartford Global Specialty - Financial Lines Employment Practices Liability (“EPL”) Claims Group currently has an open Claim Consultant/Professional position. As an EPL Claims Professional, you will be responsible for handling a caseload of claims-made, EPL claims, from inception to final disposition. As these claims are often duty-to-defend and in litigation, experience handling litigated EPL cases through resolution and managing defense counsel is required.

Responsibilities include all aspects of claim file management from assignment to conclusion including:

  • Conducting investigations and analyzing and evaluating the information learned

  • Appropriately and accurately analyzing and determining coverage, liability and damages based upon the facts of each claim

  • Communicating written position(s) to insureds and other required parties on coverage, liability, damages and other issues

  • Setting appropriate expense and indemnity reserves and monitoring on a regular basis for any needed adjustments

  • Presenting cases to management for expense and/or indemnity reserve authority above established authority levels

  • Developing and implementing resolution strategies through negotiations to achieve high quality outcomes

  • Proactively managing litigation and counsel, inclusive of litigation planning and execution, budgeting and bill review

  • Understanding and analyzing potential extra-contractual liability as needed

  • Attending trials and mediations as necessary

  • Contributing to broader claim and enterprise goals by participating in audits, projects, training and product development initiatives

  • Preparing comprehensive reports and delivering presentations to senior claim leadership on case developments, policy issues, industry trends, etc

  • Providing support and working collaboratively with business partners to evaluate and address claim trends and developments

  • Address inquiries from agents and policyholders, providing superior customer service

  • Provide key training and marketing support to Underwriters

  • Willingness to attend and present at various industry events each year on risk management and claims topics

  • Willingness to organize and present webinars and in-house risk management seminars for high profile insureds

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate degree strongly preferred, Bachelor’s Degree Required

  • Minimum of 5 years handling litigated coverage and employment practices liability cases and/or claims

  • Candidate should be disciplined, independently motivated, results-oriented and able to focus on bottom line results

  • Candidates are required to have knowledge and experience handling all aspects of EPL claims

  • Candidates should demonstrate the following:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Excellent strategic thinking ability and execution skills

  • Excellent negotiation and advanced technical claim handling skills, including knowledge of insurance coverage issues

  • Superior time, task prioritization and desk management skills.

  • An ability to communicate thoughts clearly and concisely, and to influence and persuade others

  • Ability to work with only moderate amount of supervision and employ a “team player” attitude.

    Must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement.  Candidates who live near one of our office locations (Hartford, CT, San Antonio, TX, Lake Mary, FL, Phoenix, AZ) will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.

As a condition of your employment, you must obtain and maintain a State Adjuster's License to process Property & Casualty Insurance Claims in the states supported by your office. Continued employment with The Hartford is contingent upon the successful passage of the Licensing exam(s) within 30 business days from the completion of the licensing training.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$120,000 - $180,000
