UPMC Phlebotomist in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

UPMC Community Osteopathic is hiring a flex full-time Phlebotomist to support patients in the hospital and at the outpatient lab. The selected candidate will be scheduled 28 hours per week between the hours of 5:00 AM and 1:30 PM. There is the option to structure the schedule either 4 days one week and 3 days the next, or by working 5:00 AM-9:00 PM most days and working 8-hour shifts on the weekends

This position will be on a rotation to work every third weekend and every third holiday.

Purpose: The Phlebotomist is responsible for accurate phlebotomy and specimen collection for laboratory tests vital to patient diagnosis and treatment. This role includes computer, courier, and clerical tasks, supporting laboratory operations under Medical Technologist supervision.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide courteous and professional service to laboratory customers, handling inquiries promptly.

  • Perform blood specimen collection using venipuncture, heel stick, and fingerstick, adhering to patient identification protocols. Instruct patients on self-collection methods for certain specimens.

  • Display dependability, reliability, and the ability to prioritize department needs.

  • Collect specimens at various locations, ensuring safe transport to the laboratory.

  • Follow laboratory and hospital policies regarding procedures, quality control, safety, compliance, and personnel matters.

  • Conduct clerical duties, manage patient information, and handle test orders and adjustments using computer systems.

  • Train and guide new staff, students, and residents.

  • Report any unusual occurrences to supervisory staff.

  • Execute arterial punctures when necessary, following stringent guidelines.

  • Manage and utilize supplies and reagents responsibly and cost-effectively.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program preferred.

  • Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy preferred.

  • Medical terminology knowledge and laboratory information system experience preferred. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent certification preferred.

  • Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT)

  • Act 34
