Scope of Job

This role focuses on advancing research in regenerative medicine. The position operates with considerable independence, allowing the postdoctoral research fellow to initiate and execute complex research projects, involving cell culture and experimental surgeries with biomaterials, contribute to major grant submissions, and publish findings. Additional responsibilities include managing laboratory operations, and mentoring students, all under minimal supervision.

Description of Duties

The following is a list of typical duties that may be applicable to the position:

• Collaborates with a faculty member on the writing and paperwork for major grant submissions, such as those to NIH and external foundations.

• Develops, tests, and analyzes research projects in the fields of regenerative medicine, osteoimmunology, and tissue engineering.

• Assists in the development and standardization of methodologies applied to experimental animal models and culture models.

• Conducts experimental surgeries on small animal models (rats and mice) with the supervisor and performs animal care.

• Writes narrative summaries of research results and performs related tasks under the supervision of the assigned faculty member.

• Conducts background research.

• Develops and implements data analysis strategies and prepares progress reports as needed.

• Designs and implements training activities for undergraduate and graduate mentees as required.

• Teaches one to two laboratory-lectures per semester in conjunction with the principal investigator, if assigned.

• Ensures the maintenance, security, inventory, and organization of the laboratory equipment and consumables.

• Publishes in peer-reviewed publications related to the focus of the research activities.

• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Education

A PhD degree in biomedical engineering, biomedical sciences, biological sciences, or a related health sciences field must be obtained by the time of the hiring date.

Required Experience

Experience is required in at least one of the main methodologies used in the Research Laboratory of Regenerative Medicine: cell culture models or animal models in tissue healing/regeneration.

Equipment

Use of laboratory computer and proficiency in statistical and imaging analysis software (Image J or equivalent) and research statistical applications.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/research environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
