Who We Are

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Manager Design Engineering 1 to join our team at HII Mission Technologies. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of design engineers in the development of complex systems and products for our customers. The Manager Design Engineering 1 will be responsible for ensuring that all design work is completed to the highest standards and that projects are delivered on time and within budget.

What You Will Do

  • Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.

  • Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal.

  • Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost.

  • Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development.

  • Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures.

  • Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.

  • Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.

What You Must Have

  • 4 years relevant progressive experience with Bachelors in related field; 2 years relevant progressive experience with Masters in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 8 years relevant progressive experience.

  • Candidate must have engineering and design experience in the following specialties for marine applications is required: structure and outfitting design including decks, foundations, platforms, furniture, topside structure, and arrangements

  • Candidate must have experience with conducting shipboard investigations of machinery, structural, and outfitting (diagrams, arrangements, sketches, details, work packages, and material lists) for ship alteration, repair and improvement tasks Experience managing engineers, system engineers, design engineers and designers

  • Candidate must have experience estimating marine hull engineering projects

  • Candidate must have experience with managing/checking/developing AutoCAD drawings to support shipbuilding design requirements as required

  • Candidate must be proficient with the full Microsoft Office Suite

  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level security clearance

  • Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen

Bonus Points For Having!

  • Experience in Structure and Outfitting Marine Design, shock and vibration engineering, and testing.

  • Experience with 3D printing, design for 3D printing

  • Experience with coordinating and leading ship checks on military vessels (LHD/LHA/LCS/LPD/DDG/CVN/Etc.) for the Hull & Outfitting discipline

Physical Requirements

May be required to visit job site in an industrial or shipboard environment. Normally not required to lift more than 40 pounds higher than three feet above feet/floor level.
