About This Position:

Supervises all phases of work being performed by a large multi-trade automotive and heavy equipment repair shop. Manages a diversified repair shop dealing with minor and major repair of a large fleet of specialized vehicles. Develops specifications for district equipment, tools, and related maintenance and repair devices. Consults with manufacturers and factory representatives on equipment problems, designs, and warranty agreements. Tests equipment for design, operational and physical capabilities. Prepares reports of equipment utilization, repair costs, and equipment discrepancies; oversees all shop operations including mechanic work, welding, metal fabrication, body and fender repair, painting, mechanic field repair, and preventive maintenance. Responsible for hiring and training staff, assigns work, and evaluates performance.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Four years of experience as a mechanic OR in the operation or inspection of automotive, heavy-duty gasoline, or diesel land-based equipment.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Training as a mechanic from a trade school, vocational-technical school, or military school will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience. Training will be credited in six month increments.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Broad review from the District Maintenance Engineer or other higher level administrator.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Typically, direct over Equipment Inspectors and/or Mechanic Supervisors.

LOCATION OF WORK:

Primarily in the Department of Transportation and Development. Alternative locations may be approved by SCS.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from Mechanic Supervisor B by the presence of managerial responsibility over a large comprehensive vehicle maintenance program. See SCS allocation criterion memo.

Examples of Work

EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Represents, on a district basis, the Department of Transportation and Development Equipment Unit to render assistance to District Administrators, Parish Superintendents, Equipment and Auto Shop Supervisors in preventive maintenance, equipment inspection and maintenance programs.

Manages the operation of a large shop engaged in the repair of a wide range of vehicles, heavy mobile maintenance and/or construction equipment.

May conduct on-site preventive maintenance and safety inspections of light and heavy equipment, write reports on equipment condition and recommend corrective action.

Discusses the need for various types of equipment with District Administrators, Equipment Supervisors and others; makes recommendations for specifications for purchase of equipment including revising and updating current specifications.

Maintains inventory on equipment showing location, physical history and current mechanical condition.

Evaluates products such as degreasers, greasers, graphites, sealing compounds and solvents to recommend changes in purchasing specifications for products.

Supervises on-site maintenance and safety inspections of automobiles, light and heavy trucks, heavy equipment and firefighting equipment such as dozers and fire plows.

Oversees parts inventory for all mobile equipment.

Maintains supplies of parts and coordinates distributions.

Supervises tool box inventory and shop equipment.

Makes recommendations related to the needs of various types of equipment.

Reviews and standardizes maintenance schedules.

Establishes training sessions for subordinates.
