Job Overview:

The Pharmacy Technician assists in the provision of pharmaceutical services under the direct supervision of the registered pharmacist by performing the technical, clerical, and manipulative tasks involved in the dispensing, preparing, and distributing of all medications and pharmaceutical products for all patient groups includes geriatrics, adults, adolescents, pediatrics and neonates. Work and/or performance shall conform to written established hospital policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Must obtain Pharmacy Technician credential in the state of NJ within 120 days of employment if no prior Technician experience

  • Must obtain Pharmacy Technician credentials in the state of NJ at hire if prior experience as Technician

  • Registration in NJ within 180 days of employment

  • PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) within 6 months of employment

Preferred:

  • Associates degree

  • 1 year of Pharmacy experience

Certifications and Licenses Required:

  • Must obtain Pharmacy Technician credential in the state of NJ within 120 days of employment if no prior Technician experience

  • Must obtain Pharmacy Technician credentials in the state of NJ at hire if prior experience as Technician

  • Registration in NJ within 180 days of employment

  • PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) within 6 months of employment

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Shift working, days

  • Per Diem

Essential Functions:

  • Effectively communicates, answers the phones promptly, takes messages and relays information to the registered pharmacist, facilitating open communication between the pharmacy department and other health care practitioners

  • Completes cart fill sheets, stock out sheets and floor stock sheets

  • Performs daily cassette exchanges on patient care units, checks areas for outdated, discharged and discontinued medications, replaces needed floor stock, picks up orders and delivers medications to units

  • Under the direction of a registered Pharmacist, prepares medications for dispensing in a timely manner and maintains the unit dose system, performing dosage calculations and labels appropriately

  • Under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist, assists in the restocking of emergency trays for patient care areas, prepares IV medications using aseptic techniques, repackaging of medications into unit dose packages

  • Documents activities in Pharmacy documentation software

  • Assists in care and maintenance of Departmental premises and equipment, maintains cleanliness of the work area, disposes of non-reusable items properly, follows proper safety and infection control procedures

  • Assists in the proper receipt, checking and placement into pharmacy stock of incoming vendor, medication and supply orders

  • Fills automated dispensing cabinets in patient care areas, delivers, and places medications into machines accurately, according to procedures

  • Maintains and demonstrates knowledge in the following areas of Pharmacy practice: calculations, generic-trade name relationships, special properties of IV admixtures, stability of IV preparations, contraindications, chemical formulas, abbreviations, common conversions and symbols, maintains and demonstrates awareness of limitations of technicians

  • Willingness and flexibility to work alternating and rotating work schedules

  • Complies with all applicable policies and procedures set forth by the Department of Pharmacy

  • Completes required departmental and hospital competencies

  • Provides educational rotations for pharmacy students as required and participates in staff training

  • Performs other duties as assigned to ensure patient care needs are met
