Sierra Nevada Corporation Systems Security Engineer I in Hagerstown, Maryland

As a Systems Security Engineer I, you will be using your skills and expertise to design, test, and implement our secure operating systems, networks, security monitoring, and tuning. You'll be responsible for the management of our IT security systems and applications, incident response, digital forensics, loss prevention, and eDiscovery actions, conducting risk and vulnerability assessments, and developing and implementing security controls. You'll research, evaluate, and recommend new security tools, techniques, and technologies in alignment with our IT security strategy and introduce them to the enterprise.

You will play a critical role in ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of our information systems and data by implementing and maintaining robust security measures. You will work closely with our security team to identify vulnerabilities, develop security strategies, and enforce policies and procedures to safeguard against potential threats.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assisting in the development, implementation, and enforcement of information security policies and procedures

  • Conducting regular risk assessments and vulnerability scans to identify potential security gaps and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies

  • Collaborating with system administrators, network engineers, and other IT teams to ensure secure configurations are implemented and maintained for all systems and networks

  • Monitoring security logs and investigate security incidents, reporting findings and recommending remedial actions as necessary

  • Assisting in the preparation, maintenance, and submission of accreditation and compliance documentation in accordance with relevant regulations and standards

  • Developing and delivering training programs to raise awareness among employees regarding information security best practices

  • Staying abreast of emerging security threats, trends, and technologies to proactively identify potential risks and recommend appropriate countermeasures

  • Providing support during security audits and assist in the implementation of audit recommendations

  • Assisting with incident response activities, including forensic analysis, containment, and recovery, as needed

  • Participating in security-related meetings and collaborate with stakeholders to address security concerns, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives

Must-haves:

  • Bachelor's degree in Cyber Security, Systems Security, Network Engineering, Information Technology, or related Engineering discipline and typically 0-2 or more years of relevant experience

  • Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of required education

  • Basic understanding of information security principles, concepts, and best practices

  • Knowledge of networking concepts, operating systems, and common cybersecurity tools

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve security issues

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with Engineering teams and stakeholders

  • Attention to detail and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment

  • Ethical mindset and commitment to maintaining confidentiality and integrity of sensitive information

  • Up-to-date knowledge of current and emerging cybersecurity threats and trends

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance

Preferred:

  • Strong understanding of DoD applicable Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) and NIST special publications

  • DoD 8570/8140 compliant: CAP,CISSP, CASP and/or other equivalent certification (desired) *Required within 6 months of hire

  • Cisco, Microsoft, Linux, or other technical certifications a plus

  • Understanding of Linux as well as Windows operating systems

  • Understanding of security control assessment tools such as ACAS / Tenable Nessus, SCAP Compliance Checker, and eMASS

  • Linux (Linux+, LPIC-1, RHCSA), Cisco, Microsoft, Security+ certifications

  • DoD 8570/8140 compliant: CAP,CISSP, CASP and/or other equivalent certification (desired) *Required within 6 months of hire

  • Cisco, Microsoft, Linux, or other technical certifications a plus

  • Strong communication skills, strong critical thinking and problem solving skills; self-motivated with ability to effectively prioritize projects; ability to work with people and carry out changing project priorities

U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance for employment. Non-U.S. citizens may not be eligible to obtain a security clearance.
