Hagerstown Community College Career Programs and Cohort Support Advisor in Hagerstown, Maryland

*SUMMARY STATEMENT *

The Career Programs and Cohort Support Advisor is responsible for providing intrusive and proactive outreach for specific cohorts of students. This position is responsible for overseeing the Career Program Achievers (CPA) program, case managing WIOA funded students, leading support initiatives for student parents, and working with Grants Development to identify grant support opportunities for other student cohorts.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

A.    The Career Programs and Cohort Support Advisor reports directly to the Director of Student Cohorts, Compliance, and Intervention.

 

B.    This position does not require the supervision of other staff.

 

C.    The Career Programs and Cohort Support Advisor works most closely with students and other Student Affairs offices, including the Division Directors in Career Programs, Developmental Education and Adult Literacy Services (DEALS), Advising and Student Support Services, Veterans and Military Advisor, Disability Support Services (DSS), Workforce Solutions and Continuing Education, College Advancement and Grants Development, Coordinator of Internships and Job Services, faculty and appropriate community agencies.

  DUTIES

A.     Oversees all aspects of the Career Program Achievers (CPA) Program.

  1.    Recruit qualified students based on GPA, program of study, age, and Pell eligibility.

     

  2.    Advise and support CPA and agency funded students to program completion.

     

  3.    Provide proactive and intrusive academic advisement including interpreting placement test scores, reviewing high school and college transcripts, and course scheduling.

     

  4.    Meet with CPA students regularly, minimally once each semester.

     

  5.    Explain information in the college catalog regarding degree and certificate requirements.

     

  6.    Explain college policies and procedures to students based on individual needs.

     

  7.    Assist students in career planning and development so they are prepared for the work force upon program completion.

     

  8.    Monitor enrollment and refer students to appropriate offices and faculty mentors on campus as necessary.

     

  9.    Serve on the CARE Team and provide necessary support for CPA students.

     

  10.    Explain financial aid rules and regulations.

     

  11.    Coordinate probationary period criteria for CPA students not meeting program requirements. Issue warnings to students in danger of losing stipend funding due to academic performance.

     

  12.    Track outcomes of CPA students by conducting follow ups after graduation.

     

  13.    Oversee CPA student stipend distribution and maintain accurate record of each student's stipend amounts, credit load, and financial aid information. 

     

  14.    Process and forward book voucher and credit stipend amounts to Financial Aid and Finance for awarding. 

B.    Case manage select funded credit and non-credit students through Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) agencies and other select community agencies.

  1.    Serve as a liaison with select community organizations for state funded students.

     

  2.    Provide intrusive and proactive advising and support to program participants.

     

  3.    Develop, finalize, and submit required documentation for WIOA funding, such as course outlines and cost estimates for eligible programs and students. 

     

C.    Lead campus initiatives to support student parents of children ages 18 and under.

  1.    Identify and refer students to CCAMPIS or for other relevant cohort support and scholarship opportunities.

     

  2.    Work with Student Activities in maintaining and advising the student parent club to meet student organization guidelines.

     

  3.    Coordinate co-curricular programs to engage student parents.

     

  4.    Meet individually and regularly to case manage student parents identified as at-risk of departure due to personal and academic challenges.

     

D.    Work with College Advancement, Grants Development, and Planning and Institutional Effectiveness staff in supporting the unmet needs of smaller student cohorts.

 

E.    As credentials permit, serve as a member of HCC's Behavioral Intervention (BIT) and CARE Team, by providing outreach and support to students experiencing personal challenges that can deter their academic success.

 

F.    Performs other duties as assigned, including supporting other cohort programs and student groups as time permits and campus needs dictate.

  1.    Serve as the backup School Certifying Official and provide support to the Veterans and Military Advisor as needed. 

     

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's required, Master's degree preferred.  Preference will be given to candidates who have worked with academic advisement and retention of low-income populations and who have case management experience.

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to work independently and with others; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with students and others of diverse backgrounds; computer skills to include Microsoft Office and the ability to navigate various databases.
