Job Summary/Overall Objectives

Entry level position in which both didactic and clinical training will be used to train as a phlebotomist. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and will have exemplary customer service skills. Successful candidates will be expected to maintain an 85% average in all tests and competencies. Under direct supervision, phlebotomy skills will be taught.

Essential Job Functions

  • Attend all required training sessions.

  • Be respectful of clinicians involved in training

  • Follow all required HR policies as related to patient care

  • Complete all training checklist requirements.

  • Must follow direction of the trainers

  • After appropriate instruction, and under direct supervision, perform phlebotomy using various techniques from inpatients and outpatients of all ages.

  • follows standard precautions when performing venous or capillary phlebotomy

  • assures the correct identification of patient and specimen, using two identifiers

  • follows written department protocols for blood collection

  • uses correct "order of draw" when collecting

  • follows written guidelines for post-venipuncture care

  • After appropriate instruction and under direct supervision, performs phlebotomy in a prioritized environment, and with attention to patient safety goals.

  • demonstrates minimal redraws and performs in compliance with redraw policy

  • After appropriate instruction and under direct supervision, assists or performs specimen procurement techniques as required.

  • Understands age appropriate procedures

  • assists with urine drug screen collections by following established policies and procedures

  • Assists with legal alcohol collections

  • assists with nasal swab collections

  • assists with throat culture collections

  • After appropriate instruction and under direct supervision, assesses basic specimen appropriateness

  • Can demonstrate an understanding of hemolysis

  • Processes samples appropriately by storage requirements

  • Demonstrates an understanding of specimen receipt and delivery

  • After appropriate instruction and under direct supervision, can utilize the Lab Information System

  • Demonstrates a basic understanding of specimen receipt

  • Demonstrates a basic understanding of test compendium, and functions to look up test requirements

  • Demonstrates an understanding of order entry

  • Demonstrates an understanding of result reporting, including fax requests

  • Other duties as assigned.

Competency and Experience (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

Required Qualifications/Experience

  • High School Diploma, GED or higher level of education.

  • Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment.

  • Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Experience in Healthcare setting.

License, Certification & Clearances

  • Certification of Phlebotomy from an accredited program within 6 months of hire

  • Act 34-PA Criminal Record Check from the PA State Police system

  • Valid PA Driver’s License

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).

  • Travel may be expected locally between System locations.
