The Department of Mechanical Engineering at North Carolina A&T State University (N.C. A&T) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of either Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. The successful candidate will be a dynamic individual with expertise in mechatronics. The candidate is expected to have demonstrated proficiency in automation, measurement techniques and instrumentation used in all areas of mechatronic systems. These include, but are not limited to, control aspects, computational modeling, and the fabrication, testing, and utilization of appropriate mechatronic instrumentation.

We are looking for exceptional candidates who are effective and engaged teachers, are committed to developing an independent, funded, and successful research portfolio; and engaging in vibrant and diverse collaborations and service activities.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, or in a technical field closely related to mechatronics.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

North Carolina A&T State University is a public, doctoral high research land-grant University that enrolls approximately 13,560 students. The University is a learner-centered community that develops and preserves intellectual capital through interdisciplinary learning, discovery, engagement, and operational excellence.

The College of Engineering, with over 2,300 students, has EAC ABET -accredited undergraduate programs in Architectural, Bioengineering, Biological, Civil, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering, as well as a CAC ABET -accredited program in Computer Science. At the Graduate level, the College has 8 Masters of Science Degree programs, and 5 Doctoral programs. Additional information about the College and the University can be found at www.ncat.edu/coe.

The Mechanical Engineering Department has 13 full-time faculty members and offers BS, MS and Ph.D. degrees. The department enrolls over 360 undergraduate students, 9 masters and 35 doctoral students. The department currently offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees in Mechanical Engineering. The ME undergraduate degree program has an Aerospace Option for students who are interested in aerodynamics, aero-propulsion, avionics and aero-structures. An Honors program is available for those students with a strong academic background and research interest. Our faculty members and their graduate students perform research in such areas as materials, aerospace, structural health monitoring, thermal management, micro-mechanics and micro-fluidics, CFD , control systems, design and manufacturing.

Requirements:

The minimum qualifications are as follows:

  1. A Ph.D. in Mechanical and in some cases, Electrical Engineering, at the start of the contract.

  2. Strong written and oral communication skills.

  3. A commitment to work and conduct research with a technically diverse and multicultural community of professors and students.

  4. A commitment to pedagogical activities that will lead to the advancement of engineering education and research in the mechatronic field.

  5. A demonstrated record of research and scholarship in the area of mechatronics.

  6. The candidate should be interested in interdisciplinary research and able to contribute to at least one of the College’s five research thrust areas: Energy and Sustainability; Cybersecurity & Network Operations; Health Care Applications; Multiscale Materials; Aerospace and Transportation Applications.

Preferred:

A preferred candidate will have the following:

  1. At least five years of Post-doctoral/Industrial experience in the field of mechatronics.

  2. PE License highly encouraged but not required.

  3. A demonstrated record of effective teaching and scholarly publications in the field of mechatronics.

  4. A demonstrated commitment to service to the community, and university and profession.

  5. A demonstrated record of mentoring students at the undergraduate and graduate levels from diverse backgrounds.

  6. The potential to be a recognized scholar in their respective field.
