The Department of Chemistry at North Carolina A&T State University, College of Science and Technology, invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the field of Analytical Chemistry, starting August 2024. The appointment is expected to be at the assistant professor level. An appointment at a higher rank might be considered for exceptionally qualified applicants.

In particular, the Department is seeking for a qualified candidate who can develop a collaborative and innovative research program in proteomics or metabolomics for pharmaceutical research and/or in environmental and toxicity issues in various matrices. A general expertise and potential to initiate applied analytical chemistry research with a strong expertise in analytical instrumentation such as Mass Spectroscopy that will align with the Department and the College’s interests in Applied Science and Technology is highly desired.

All areas of specialization in experimental analytical & materials chemistry will be considered. We are particularly interested in individuals who will establish a nationally recognized research with externally-funded extramural funding, and direct the research activities of MS and PhD students in applied chemistry and related areas. Excellent collaborative opportunities among departmental faculty members, College-wide and University-wide faculty as well as neighboring Triad area universities are strongly encouraged.

The hired faculty is expected to show commitment to teaching excellence. She/he is expected to engage in culturally responsive teaching, teach Chemistry courses at the graduate and under-graduate level, develop courses and curricula, direct students in research, and provide service to the University and community.

The ideal candidate will develop and maintain a vigorous research program in environmental sensor development or applied analytical chemistry, as well as synthesis and processing of functional materials; surface and microstructure characterizations, optical characterizations, electrical characterizations, device applications including nano-electronic, solar cells, and sensing applications.

Mentoring undergraduate research students is also expected as chemistry majors in the department follow a curricula that includes active research participation. A candidate whose teaching and research efforts will promote the mission of the Chemistry Department and the strategic vision of the College of Science and Technology ( COST ) as well as the University is highly desired. Collaboration with colleagues from the sciences, mathematics, and technology areas is encouraged.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is an 1890 land-grant doctoral Research University dedicated to learning, discovery, and community engagement. The College of Science and Technology enrolls 2184 students. It is a national leader that serves and engages the citizens of the state of North Carolina, the nation, and the world through preeminence in science and technology education, research, discovery, and innovation. The College houses the departments of Applied Engineering Technology, Biology, Built Environment, Chemistry, Computer Systems Technology, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, and the Ph.D. Program of Applied Science Technology. The College is experiencing substantial growth in enrollment, faculty size, curricula, and research.

The Department of Chemistry’s primary function is teaching, research and service to students and the larger community. The Department is currently operating with 16 full-time tenure track faculty to support teaching and research needs of the undergraduate and graduate students. The Undergraduate Chemistry program is approved by the American Chemical Society ( ACS ). The undergraduate enrollment currently is >100 Chemistry majors. A PhD program in Applied Science and Technology ( AST ) has started enrolling students and the department trains PhD students as part of the AST program in Applied Chemistry. The current graduate enrollment is 20 with 12 students enrolled in the AST PhD program in Applied Chemistry. The remaining graduate students are working for the MS degree.

Requirements:

Candidates must have a PhD degree in Analytical Chemistry at the time of the anticipated appointment date.

Preferred:

Candidates with the following are preferred:

1) A focus in Applied Analytical chemistry as well as Analytical Instrumentation

2) Postdoctoral research in analytical or applied analytical chemistry

3) Strong aptitude for using instructional technology

4) A research and pedagogy plan that can attract funding from various granting agencies

5) Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with other faculty and colleagues in the sciences, math, and technology areas.
