Summary The Power Systems Branch is looking for someone with unique technical and programmatic skills to join their team as a Senior Power Systems Engineer specializing in space flight applications for LASER Electrical Power Systems development. The work involves architecture development oversight and demonstration of leading-edge technology on power electronics supporting all facets of space-borne and landed crafts. Leads teams in hardware development of unique LASER power electronics solutions. Responsibilities Plans and coordinates the efforts of engineering teams engaged in development of LASER Electrical Power Systems, analysis and trades of spacecraft bus power impacts, and technical direction for complex system development. Plans and evaluates electrical power system for projects, programs, proposals, mission studies, and research/development pertaining to relevant novel optoelectronic device driver technologies; presents technology management solutions. Directs the planning, specification, manufacturing, and procurement of unique and leading-edge technology for the development of direct or indirect energy conservation storage devices and power systems. Serves as a technical expert and lead engineer in planning and implementing specialized LASER Instrument Electrical Power System electronics for space flight applications based upon corresponding risk, scientific application, cost and schedule. Evaluates design requirements, trades and limitations of space flight LASER Instrument Electrical Power Systems electronics based on available LASER systems mission parameters. Reviews, advises, and conducts technical analysis and development studies in support of major Science programs and technology driven requirements. Oversees contractor activities and acts as a technical specialist and/or Contracting Officer Representative in Lidar based Flight Instrument Power System development and similar Internal Research and Developments (IRAD). Participates as Electrical Power Systems Subject Matter Expert at internal, agency, national or international teams or reviews for programs, projects, anomaly investigation, failure review boards, technical assessments, and mission support as needed. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level: Leading a multidisciplinary development team or technology projects that include creating specifications, statement of work, requirements, trades, drawings, analysis, evaluations, and/or end-to-end qualification performance testing for LASER Instrument Electrical Power System electronics development; Performing project management in all phases of the project's life cycle including the cost, evaluation, and schedule control of space flight LASER Electrical Power System electronics development and custom Ground Support Equipment for specialized performance evaluation of in and out-of-house LASER Power Electronics; Performing laboratory research, troubleshooting, and resolving manufacturing issues of space flight LASER Power Systems electronics including the development of specialized test equipment with the ability to investigate, resolve problems, and test to provide long term reliability in the LASER Power Electronics area and achieve mission requirements. Education Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following: a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations. If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
