Description of Job

About the Work Unit

This position is in CDOT’s Region 4 Traffic Signals Electrical Crew. This work unit is based in Greeley and travels throughout northeastern Colorado to perform electrical work. This work unit operates and maintains the regional traffic signal inventory and associated traffic control devices, highway lighting systems, all necessary computer hardware and software comprising the regional traffic signal system, and maintains, upgrades, and installs electrical circuits and devices on all CDOT properties in accordance with the National Electric Code, MUTCD, and other state/federal regulations.

About the Position

Under supervision, this position assists skilled, licensed electricians with and performs the installation, repair, and maintenance of Traffic Signals, Electrical Systems, Highway Lighting, Warning Beacons, Interconnect Communications, Variable Message Signs, ITS devices, and CDOT buildings and grounds within CDOT Region 4 (northeastern Colorado).

Responds 24/7 to emergencies involving signalized intersections, roadway lighting and interchanges and other CDOT electrical emergencies. Provides insight and assistance for engineers, contractors, and outside agencies regarding c urrent and existing traffic signal locations, operations, and design.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist with and perform installations, maintenance, repair, and inspection of electrical infrastructure, including but not limited to electrical distribution services, roadway and facility lighting, equipment, and power distribution and inspection of electrical equipment in Region 4.

  • Operate equipment such as aerial device, backhoe, loader, trencher, concrete saw, other specialized equipment, and hand and power tools.

  • Locate underground cables and utilities for contractors and maintenance; operate utility locating equipment and work around and near live electric, gas, water, and other utility lines.

  • Assist with and install, maintain, and inspect Traffic Control Devices and systems within Region 4, which include but are not limited to traffic signals, flashing beacons, lighting, variable message signs, ITS devices, and interconnect systems.

  • Assist with and install and maintain temporary traffic control devices in work areas according to current policies and standards.

  • Assist with and install, maintain, and inspect communication systems, including but not limited to systems and equipment for intelligent transportation systems, video monitoring and detection, fiber optics, hardwire, and radio systems.

  • Use computers and other office equipment for communications and documentation, such as time sheets, fuel and mileage, job journal, materials, etc.

  • Follow safety guidelines and use appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • Typical work schedule is five 8-hour days, Monday through Friday. This schedule may change as required.

  • On average, 20% of the work hours are spent in an office setting and 80% in the field.

  • The average work week is 40 hours a week, with periodic overtime due to emergencies or inclement weather.

  • Required to work on ladders and/or bucket trucks at heights from 10-80 feet.

  • Occasional in-state/overnight travel.

  • Frequent travel during work day for training, meetings, and assigned work orders.

  • Required to drive CDOT vehicles.

  • Work around live electric, gas, water, and other utility lines.

  • Exposure to loud noises.

  • Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin.

  • Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600 V) and electrical shock.

  • Required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time - hot and cold.

  • Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties.

  • Due to locations of some of the equipment, must be physically able to work at 11,000 feet altitude

  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions

  • Required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime, including weekends and holidays

Minimum Qualifications

Experience Only:

  • At least two years of progressively responsible electrical experience in commercial or industrial electrical construction which included 1 or more of the following areas:

  • Process control

  • Programmable logic controllers

  • Traffic signals and traffic signal components

  • Troubleshooting

Education and Experience:

A combination of relevant education and/or experience equal to two (2) years

  • Satisfactory completion of a formalized electrician apprenticeship will substitute for the required experience

  • Appropriate electrician education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis

  • Progressively responsible electrical experience in commercial or industrial electrical construction which included 1 or more of the following areas:

  • Process control

  • Programmable logic controllers

  • Traffic signals and traffic signal components

  • Troubleshooting

Conditions of Employment

  • Must obtain a valid Colorado Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes within six months of hire.

  • A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.

  • May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e., drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider.

  • Essential Services Designation – Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.

  • May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes' driving time in normal weather conditions to be able to respond in a timely manner after being notified to report to work. Knowledge of an emergency or hazardous condition may be considered to be notification to report to work station. (maintenance subarea only)

  • New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training at KOA in Aurora, while veteran CDOT employees are required to attend training one week out of each year in Golden. (maintenance subarea only)

Preferred Qualifications

The exceptional applicant will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:

  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;

  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;

  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;

  • At least two years of progressively responsible electrical experience in commercial or industrial electrical construction, in any combination of the following areas:

  • Process control; or

  • Programmable logic controllers; or

  • Traffic signals and traffic signal components; or

  • Troubleshooting.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and best practices of the National Electrical Code;

  • Knowledge of and experience in installing, repairing, replacing, and troubleshooting a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment;

  • Knowledge and understanding of fiber optic (wireless and hardwire), cabling handling, termination and splicing;

  • Experience using the National Electric Code, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), construction standards, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70 and CDOT's Standards and Specifications book;

  • Knowledge and understanding of traffic signal infrastructure and ITS devices;

  • Effective project management, work scheduling, and organizational skills;

  • Strong oral and written communication skills;

  • Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills;

  • Strong positive and can-do attitude;

  • Strong commitment to safety;

  • Self-starter and motivated to accomplish tasks;
