MNIT DNR provides comprehensive IT operations and support services, custom application development, and dedicated support functions to an organization that manages and conserves the state’s natural resources in a way that creates a sustainable quality of life for all Minnesotans.
* Please note that this is a limited, part-time position, with the expectation of working 15 hours per week, depending on selected candidate’s school schedule and summer/winter breaks. You will also have the option to work full-time (40 hours per week) during school and summer breaks. This position is currently anticipated to last up to 12 months.
Embark on an exciting opportunity as a Student GIS Technician with the Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) and Department of Natural Resources (DNR)! In this role, you'll collaborate with the talented MNIT DNR GIS team to advance innovative Geographic Information System (GIS) initiatives. Your contributions will include:
Shaping the geospatial data framework to meet enterprise-wide needs.
Assisting in the review, creation, and enhancement of processes, data, and metadata within the MN DNR Enterprise Portal for ArcGIS.
Supporting the publication and management of enterprise GIS content on the MNIT DNR Enterprise Portal for ArcGIS.
Engaging in diverse projects, offering support, and participating in training sessions to expand your GIS skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Student Worker Eligibility - To be eligible for appointment as a Student Worker Paraprofessional Senior you must be enrolled in a post-secondary or graduate educational program or plan to enroll within three months. Students may be "off" for the summer or for one semester/quarter and remain employed as a student worker, but such absences cannot exceed one semester/quarter in a year. If you are enrolled at a credit-granting institution you must carry at least six semester/nine quarter credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution or one that only offers one credit per class, you must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load will be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an Educational Verification form prior to appointment.
Currently enrolled in an accredited college program as a junior, senior or graduate student
Academic programs can include GIS, Computer Science, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Natural Resource Management or Forestry, Urban / Regional Planning, or Management Information Systems with some course work that emphasizes GIS technologies (Introduction to GIS, Advanced GIS, Remote Sensing, Spatial Analysis, and Introduction to Cartography)
Experience must include:
Class work or experience using ArcGIS Pro including creating, editing and maintaining file-based geodatabases.
Class work or experience managing ArcGIS online content, and publishing features and services to portal or ArcGIS online.
Class work or experience working with geospatial data and metadata.
Ability to deliver effective verbal or written messages that facilitate a mutual understanding on both parties.
Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem-solving.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience or class work with scripting for databases with Python.
Experience or class work with configuring and editing feature classes in ArcGIS Pro.
Knowledge of database design methods and documentation techniques.
Familiarity with code versioning systems.
