Description of Job
This position is part of our Veterans Affairs division of the Department of MIlitary and Veterans Affairs. This position is located in Grand Junction at our Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado that provides for the interment of eligible veterans, their spouses and eligible dependents and to maintain the cemetery in a dignified manner. This position supports all cemetery operations in a variety of administrative functions to include, but not limited to:
engaging directly with veterans, families, government entitites, community partners, and internal customers to schedule all aspects of burial services;
assisting families with all aspects of funeral details to include the announcement, determining plot locations, gravestone engravings, music, escorting family members and mourners, coordinating procession, ordering headstones, making announcements, and planning for contingencies due to weather, heat, etc.
serving as primary point of contact for visitors and phone calls, maintaining the master schedule of interments in the most economical and efficient manner, developing and maintaining various internal and state/federal databases and spreadsheets, engaging in filing systems and clerical letters/memos, assisting with reconciliation of weekly and monthly reports identifying alternatives to improve efficiencies such as paperless records system;
managing the State Military Honor Guard Stipend, collecting applications, communicating with applicants and maintain accurate balance and reconciliation of funds and assisting veterans service organizations with enrollments;
serving as the representative of the cemetery at veteran related organizations, community outreach events and cemetery programs such as Memorial Day Ceremonies, Veterans Day ceremonies, Veterand Day parades, Vietnam Veterans day, Saluting Branches, Wreaths Across America, Missing in America, Fall Festival parade, Annual Flag Retirement, Quarterly Military Honors and other community events with schools, civic organizations, and other veteran communities involving coordination of equipment and vehicles for events, transporting/deliver of equipment and materials, staffing of events, coordinating volunteers, etc.
assisting with cemetery operational needs regarding timing of irrigation systems, mowing schedules, planting operations, tree trimming, and analyzing ground needs.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of cemetery experience that included cemetery grounds and maintenance experience of which one year included professional clerical experience and two years of successful customer service experience dealing with grieving individuals.
OR
A combination of related education (such as Business Management, Funeral Director, etc.) and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years. Please attach certificate or transcripts to this on-line application.
