job purpose :

Under limited supervision, the Automation Engineer continuously evaluates the existing process control systems for reliability of control and effectiveness. In fulfilling this role, the Automation Engineer works closely with team department members providing technical automation expertise and implementing solutions to improve processes, increase equipment reliability, reduce cost factors and minimize unplanned downtime.

responsibilities:

  • Develop, troubleshoot, improve and maintain automation documentation (schematics, functional descriptions, PLC programs, SCADAs, etc.)

  • Responsible for integration and maintaining of PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, Servo Drives, and process controls.

  • Responsible for the standardization of control systems, control logic designs, documentation of operation procedures and as-built drawings and logic.

  • Plant liaison for new system start up and commissioning by all outside controls contractors and system integrators to ensure proper transfer of documented PLC program changes and adequate training on the installation/changes that have been completed.

  • Provides tactical automation troubleshooting skills daily.

  • Responsible for training end users on the operations of newly installed or modified process control systems.

  • Plan, source and execute automation and electrical projects.

  • Manage automation improvement projects including vision systems.

  • Manage the automation team which includes Instrument Controls Techs.

  • Develop and track project program & engineering resource requirements including design, installation and commissioning tasks. Report to the Project Manager for project & program related tasks including budget control, progress reports & forecasting.

  • Analyze, design, develop, and implement an automation solution including database, reports, HMI and PLC programs to meet project requirements.

  • Configure control system including PLC and the HMI/SCADA system.

  • Finalize automation options such as distributed I/O and/or control field bus networks, etc.

  • Design, test and configure control panels, motor control centers, Ethernet networks, ASI networks, and pneumatic circuits, for automation systems.

  • Development electrical single line diagrams and schematics as required.

  • Configure valve tops, variable frequency drives and motor starters.

  • Ensure all automation designs implemented comply with UL508A, Code of Practice, Client Electrical Standards and any other regulatory requirements.

  • Participating in design reviews and safety risk assessments.

  • Manage automation activities on site for installation, commissioning and performance testing phases. Commission food processing automation systems.

  • Mentor/train Instrumentation & Controls Technicians

  • Documentation -- Manages all electrical documents through phases of concept review, final review, purchasing, fabrication, and deployment. Provide power consumption, system cost, estimated electrical build and programming time to each operations engineering for capital projects review and approval. Releases schematic and BOM for purchasing and fabrication. Releases recommended spare parts list during deployment.

  • Other duties/tasks may be assigned

skills/qualifications required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering preferred

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

  • Ability to update electrical prints.

  • Aseptic/Dairy experience preferred.

  • Ability to program CIP circuits and full understanding of the science for cleaning from a automation standpoint.

  • Strong Consumer Package Goods background

  • Skilled in organizing resources and establishing priorities.

  • Demonstrated skills in:

  • Allen Bradley: o PLC5, RSLogix 500, RS Logix 5000 and Safety PLCs o PowerFlex 525 VFD o Allen Bradley HMI’s: Panel Builder, Factory Talk o RSLinx, RS Networx for DeviceNet, RS Networx for ControlNet

  • Siemens: o S7-200, S7-300, S7-1200, S7-1500 PLC’s o Tia Portal PLC/HMI Software o Siemens MP & TP HMI’s, WinCC Flexible 2007

  • Demonstrated skills in:

  • Robots: o ABB, Fanuc, Kawasaki, Yaskawa Motoman, and Nachi

  • SCADA / HMIs:

  • Developed Allen Bradley FactoryTalk HMI and Siemens Simatic HMI Displays for Automated Systems

  • Developed and Maintained SCADA Screens for Warehouse Distribution Conveyor Systems.

  • Worked on Dematic’s GSMi SCADA Systems and KNAPP’s Wonderware SCADA Systems.

  • Added Display Screens

  • Added Conveyor Layouts

  • Corrected display indicator tag addressing.

  • Tested Screens and Conveyor Layout Indicators for correct operation.

  • Able to maintain confidentiality of records and information.

  • Knowledge of USDA, State, Federal regulations for a dairy manufacturing facility strongly preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgements on sensitive, confidential issues.

  • Ability to supervise and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.

  • Ability to analyze and assess training and development needs.

  • Knowledge of computerized information systems used in quality assurance, maintenance, and ERP applications.

  • Able to stand for extended periods of time, lift a minimum of 40 lbs. on an occasional basis, and able to climb ladders and work at elevations of 75 feet

  • Ability to handle ambiguity and work in a fast paced, entrepreneurial environment

  • Ability to work all shifts including off shifts

  • Ability to lead an Automation Team with proven experience with leading a team of automation technicians.

  • Analyzed industry automation trends and bring into our way of doing business.

food safety requirements:

  • Notify supervision of any repairs or adjustments that are required that may affect product quality or food safety.

  • Understand, observe, and comply with the handling and usage of the color-coded container policy while in the Production Areas.

  • Perform all duties necessary to meet Company, Customer and/or Government requirements/standards as prioritized by the Company.

  • Ability to initiate action to prevent the occurrence of nonconformities relating to Food Safety and the Quality of the product, processes, quality system, or safety system.

  • Identify and record any problems relating to Food Safety and the Quality of the ingredients, processes, quality system, or safety system.

  • Control further processing or delivery of nonconforming product in terms of Food Safety and Quality issues until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected.

  • In the event of absence, another employee with the same skill level will assume the duties and responsibilities as required.
