Job Description

Are you passionate about both grid analysis and software development? Want to help build, integrate, and apply the next generation of power systems planning tools to help transform energy systems and create supportive market structures?

The Price Signals for Grid Services (PSGS) group in NREL’s Grid Planning and Analysis Center (GPAC) is looking for one or more exceptional candidate(s) to join our team. PSGS develops capabilities (i.e. tools, data, and expertise) and applies them to analyze future integrated energy systems, inclusive of retail and bulk power system market and regulatory structures. The ideal candidate will bring a combination of deep experience with engineering simulation and technoeconomic design for retail and bulk power system markets, along with in-depth, collaborative programming experience in one or more software languages. Other exceptional candidates with multi-disciplinary backgrounds and a strong understanding of the power system, excitement for this type of work, strong computer skills, and a proven track record of success in new areas are also encouraged to apply. Experience with linking multiple software tools together is a plus. We are especially interested in candidates who know the power grid and also enjoy writing user/researcher-oriented documentation, developing automated test suites/datasets that realistically push tool limits, and fostering open-source and other collaborative software communities.

If hired for this position, you will help develop state-of-the art energy system modeling techniques, software, and simulations for breakthrough analysis of future (and current) energy systems with high shares of wind, solar and other renewable energy that support a reliable, affordable, and equitable energy transition. You will also help apply the resulting tools to conduct analysis across a range of fidelities from in-depth engineering models to multi-perspective expansion models to retail rate models, along with simplified representations for faster analysis. You will work closely with other NREL research engineers to further establish capabilities that bring together traditionally separate analyses, such as: modeling advanced market operations and products to understand the impact on market clearing, investment decisions, and resource adequacy; multi-perspective equilibrium modeling inclusive of electricity customers and suppliers; modeling demand-side resources such as demand flexibility and energy efficiency as bulk power system resources; and quantifying the impacts of various buildout paths on retail rates across different customer classes. The interested candidate is also likely to find opportunities to collaborate with other researchers and across NREL to dive deeper into power sector modeling and/or pursue cross-sectoral research (i.e., to explore connections with other energy carriers and networks, or to more deeply examine demand-side sectors).

Our team is comprised of researchers, engineers, software developers, modelers, physicists, product managers, thought leaders, system thinkers, and life-long learners. We strive to push the boundaries of innovation, integrated analysis, and computational tool development. You would join us in developing innovative modeling approaches, collaboratively applying them with a wide-range of research and industry partners to conduct high-impact analysis, and working to articulate current trends and chart future needs in integrated grid systems. A sample of on-going research areas include: demand flexibility, DER adoption, customer bill calculations, utility-scale investment decisions, price formation, resource adequacy, resilience, capacity expansion, and policy analysis. We partner with DOE, other federal agencies, states, utilities, ISO/RTOs, communities, and technology developers on grid planning and analysis. Our work informs policymakers and utilities by developing and analyzing future grid scenarios that answer big questions about how the electric power system is transforming.

This work can be completed remotely, with a preference for an onsite presence.

Please include a cover letter with your application.
