DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Athletic Trainer Certified/Certified Surgical First Assist

Full Time: Minimum of 40 hours per week, support within the clinic and surgical assist duties.

Summary

Under general supervision by a physician, the athletic trainer (AT) will provide clinical support services primarily in sports medicine and general orthopedic practice. If the AT also has obtained the Orthopedic Technologist Certification (OTC) he or she will also provide surgical assisting duties as directed by the orthopedic surgeon. These may include but are not limited to: patient positions, draping, using sterile techniques, passing of instruments, tissue retraction, management working portals and arthroscopic devices, graft preparation, skin closure and application of post-operative dressings as well as any other task delineated by the OTC scope of practice.

Procedures such as wound care, cast application and removal, splinting and brace fitting, crutch and gait training, therapeutic exercise. Orders radiograph tests under physician guidelines. Performs diagnostic examinations and provide physical therapy under physician orders. Assists in surgery center for needs of physicians, will work as an assistant to the surgeon in the OR in any one or more duties including; prepping, draping and positioning of the patient, using suctioning, the arthroscopic camera and retracting tissue, prepping harvested tissues, and suturing/closing wounds under the supervision of the physician, provides proper post-operative care to the patient. Provides care with a "billing center" for ATC's in the clinic within their scope of practice. Helps in learning and teaching anatomy, MRI and x-ray reading, and learning the day to day needs for a medical practice to staff.

Clinic Functions:

· Assist care teams with:

o Scrubbing provider schedules 24-48 hours in advance, prepping to ensure all needed documentation for visits is available.

o Patient intake and rooming, obtaining a patient history and performing a physical exam.

o Documents all patient care actions in the EMR timely and accurately.

o Provide patient education, schedule follow up appointments and wrap of patient visit.

o Assist with casting and splinting application, durable medical equipment services, providing pre- and post­-operative wound care for patients.

o Assisting with managing the clinical in-baskets for teams.

o Prepping orders and prescriptions under the direction of the supervising physician.

Operating Room Functions:

· Provides first assist in surgery:

o Prepping, draping and positioning of the patient.

o Using suctioning, driving the arthroscopic camera and retracting tissue.

o Tissue graft preparation for both allograft and autograft.

o Excellent suturing skills are a must under the supervision of the physician.

o Provides proper post-operative care to the patient.

o Assists with filling out forms and paperwork as needed, including referrals.

REQUIREMENTS

Education, Licensure and/or Experience Required

· Active Certifications in the State of Colorado for:

o Athletic Training and Surgical First Assist

· Bachelor's degree and 2-4 years of experience in an orthopedic/sports medicine setting providing direct patient care OR completion of a recognized AT residency program

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required

· Well-developed clinical skills.

· Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to synthesize data and initiate medical treatment plans based on the provider's direction.

· Attention to detail is required for the applicant to succeed

· Ability to multi-task.

· Possess a strong desire to develop high-level surgical skills to become a true asset to the team.

· Work effectively as a true extension of the supervising physician.

· Effective communication skills to clearly communicate with patients and other staff members.

· Gather pertinent information regarding conditions to create well organized, succinct, and clear information to supervising physicians and advanced practice providers.

Pay Information: $60k to $100k annually, based on experience
