Glens Falls Hospital Lab Lead, Cytology in Glens Falls, New York

Leads the technical functions and assists with the administrative activities of the designated section in the clinical laboratory through efficient time management, multi-tasking, organizational skills, purposeful delegation, and effective communication. Upholds professional levels of customer service driven focus and fosters strong service-oriented relationships with internal and external clinical staff, patients, and vendors. Actively communicates needs to Laboratory Management. Essential Functions: * Organizes bench assignments and delegates routine and periodic responsibilities to staff in collaboration with other leaders to maintain appropriate service levels across the service line. Assures that coverage and work assignments are appropriate, and staff conform to work schedule. Monitors delegates for effectiveness. * Completes ongoing monitoring and evaluation of quality systems including the validation and performance of analytic systems, quality controls, patient testing and proficiency testing. * Organizes and provides training, orientation, and rotation of proficiency testing to assist with maintaining and evaluating staff competency. Provides mentorship and educational opportunities for staff including constructive criticism in a positive and professional manner as needed. Is approachable and develops trust and openness with staff so that staff are comfortable sharing ideas, concerns, and problems. Coordinates with other laboratory leaders in the evaluation of staff performance evaluations and the maintenance of employee records. Oversees the training and evaluation of affiliated students. * Remains current on accrediting agency regulatory standards and requirements to ensure compliance across the service line. Is involved in the development and maintenance of controlled documentation. This includes monitoring and maintenance of the NYSDOH ECLRS System when appropriate. Proactively recommends changes/modifications and assists with implementation of policies, procedures, and processes to continually improve the service line. * Oversees and assists with routine preventative maintenance of equipment to ensure that it is performed as scheduled and that associated records are maintained. Schedules and documents repairs, replacements, and maintenance needs of equipment or instruments. Coordinates with instrument and supply vendors as needed to ensure performance of materials and instrumentation is maintained. Provides input on the selection of new equipment. * Acts as Clinical Laboratory Technologist as needed to ensure appropriate service levels. Maintains all competencies in assigned areas. * Maintains the clinical information system as it pertains to the laboratory and perform validations of all software and instrument changes. Reviews patient reports in all information system to ensure the results are accurate and the formatting is appropriate and meets regulatory guidelines. Coordinates with IT resources as needed to ensure the accuracy and performance of the clinical information system is maintained. * Oversees the ordering and inventory of supplies to ensure appropriate levels of all testing and other work-related materials. This includes the evaluation of current supplies for cost saving opportunities. * Actively participates on teams (e.g., Infection Control/Transfusion Committee) or work groups within the organization and/or laboratory. Encourages the participation of laboratory staff in these teams/groups. * Participates in problem reporting and responses as applicable. (i.e. RLDatix & ECRI) Other Functions: * Actively participates in in-services and continuing education programs to broaden general working knowledge. * Responsible for maintaining their own required yearly personnel file (physical and/or electronic copy) including, but not limited to, competency documentation, mandatory training, minimum of 12 hours continuing education, and copy of current license(s) and certification(s). * Other duties as assigned by Laboratory Leadership Education & Experience Qualify as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as defined in that Job Description. Minimum of 4 years clinical laboratory experience, preferably in an acute care hospital setting with significant outreach volumes. Licenses, Certifications, Registrations Licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist by the New York State Education Department is required American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) registration preferred. Specialist Certification in area of technical lead duties is preferred. Skills and Abilities Ability to operate various technical instrumentation. Ability to work with departmental computer/PC applications. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and instrument printouts. Ability to document brief reports regarding test results operational problems/follow up. Ability to present information and respond to questions from coworkers, patients, and physicians. Ability to work with mathematical concepts of normal range and standard deviations. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, and ratios, as applied to technical procedures. Ability to solve problems regarding instrumentation, technical procedures, or testing results. Ability to interpret instructions from documentation such as standard operating procedures and vendor manuals that are in written and/or diagram form. Ability to professionally and respectfully communicate verbally and interact with physicians, nurses, coworkers, and vendors. Salary Range The expected base rate for this Glens Falls, New York, United States-based position is $30.94to $46.42per hour. Exact rate is determined on a case-by-case basis commensurate with experience level, as well as education and certifications pertaining to each position which may be above the listed job requirements.
