Exciting Opportunity for a Commercial Manager.

We are looking for a Commercial Manager to join our team and work closely with the Commercial Director in driving commercial excellence across our business unit. The successful candidate will manage relationships with external clients and agencies, as well as internal departments, with a primary focus on collaborating with our Sales teams both locally and in our regional offices worldwide. Responsibilities include negotiating terms and conditions, managing and improving contract execution, and fostering close, trusted relationships with our Value Streams teams. The Commercial Manager will support our ambitious growth plans, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and enhance rigour around risk assessment for active projects, bids, and the opportunity pipeline.

What will you do?

  • You’ll focus strongly on commercial rigour. Key to this is a thorough assessment of risk (to the project and to the Howden financial performance). The manager will have a strong understanding cashflows, milestone management, the application of T&Cs (and mitigating actions when required).

  • You’ll implement changes and set standards for our processes across the Value Streams and Aftermarket. Continuous review and improvement of existing processes and tools is essential to ensure an excellent level of customer service.

  • Support the Value Streams during tender negotiations to ensure terms agreed are mutually beneficial and clear for Howden to execute. The Commercial Manager will actively participate in project risk reviews, T&C reviews and negotiations and, ultimately, play an active part in win strategies.

  • Coach, develop and mentor our execution teams in how to engage proactively with the wider Howden business and externally with clients in order that they deploy a clean commercial approach that delivers for both Howden and the client.

  • Take a lead on claims resolution. This requires a high level of experience and skill in dispute management, knowing how to manage internal stakeholders and client communication. Regular contact with our legal department is normal and attending commercial meetings in overseas locations may be required.

What do you bring?

To be successful you must have …

  • As Commercial Manager, you will be qualified to degree level in a business, finance or engineering discipline and/or you will have gained a minimum of 5 years’ experience in commercial management.

  • Commercial acumen and how to focus on what matters to Howden (volume, clean order to cash process, growing the business profitably and sustainably).

  • A sound understanding of financial reporting and rules. Cashflow, revenue recognition, balance sheet and profit & loss.

  • Change Management. Apply a collaborative working style to positively affect change across the organisation.

  • Dispute resolution experience.

  • Data analysis and management skills. Present facts to drive outcomes.

  • Audit and reporting of business processes and management systems

It’s a bonus if you have (but not essential) ..

  • Management of a commercial or project team.

  • Some legal knowledge - contractual terms such as liquidated damages, levels of liability, indemnities, contractual breach.

  • Experience of working in an international business, with a global client base.

  • Lean or Six Sigma training/qualification.
