Description of Job
The Transportation Maintenance III (TM III) position is a working Supervisor that has responsibilities above and beyond the performance of regular maintenance duties and activities. As a working Supervisor you are responsible for the overall maintenance and operations of a particular geographical area within the Region that supports and makes major patrol decisions to plan, develop, administer, and manage programs such as MS-4 regulations and EPA requirements. Also, this position is responsible for knowing how to react in emergency situations, such as when avalanches and road failures occur.
This position includes signature authority for expenditures, approval authority for its employee’ credit card use, expense report approval, supply ordering approval, and leave approval, just to name a few approval items. At the Supervisory level you may recommend corrective actions, staffing patterns, equipment purchases, regional policy changes and much more. This position has a very strong working relationship with the LTC Ops I in the Unit and supports higher level decisions.
The following are some of the other working duties/activities that this position may perform:
Ensures a safe and healthy work environment for all personnel on a day to day basis, keeping all employees working at their highest potential and keeping morale high;
Plans, assigns and reviews the work of Transportation Maintenance Worker II's and other staff;
Ensures compliance with all applicable policies, laws, rules and regulations;
Coordinates with other Transportation Maintenance Supervisors and LTC Ops and ensures that maintenance activities are performed in accordance with appropriate plans, specifications and agency standards; supervises maintenance activities through scheduling of staff, equipment and products with allotted region dollars to meet levels of service;
Leads employees by training, mentoring and coaching on the job and in the classroom; monitors personnel performance and addresses problems;
Supervises snow and ice control programs;
Supports and coordinates operations and initiates changes particularly in emergency conditions and unique situations; assists in emergency response incidents, which could include road closures, accidents, haz-mat spills, and road failures; coordinates with State Patrol and other law enforcement agencies;
Represents CDOT with cities, counties, other groups and officials, and the public;
Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
Exposure to loud noise
Exposure to fumes, odors, gasses, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin
Required to use appropriate personal protective equipment
Required to work with chemicals and cleaning products
Some equipment requires the use of respirators
Work in close proximity to heavy traffic
Use of ladders and scissor lifts for heights of approximately 10 – 20’
Required to use various hand tools and to operate heavy equipment, such as backhoe, tractor, bucket truck, forklift, skid steer, loader, aerial devices and other equipment
Required to drive CDOT vehicles
Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600 V) and electrical shock
Some of the positions are NIGHTS ONLY and others are WEEKEND positions
Frequently responds to emergencies outside of regular work hours and may work overtime including weekends and holidays
Must be willing and be physically able to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold), variable weather conditions, and at varying elevations up to 12,000 feet for long periods of time
Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties
The average work week is 40 hours a week, with periodic overtime due to emergencies or inclement weather
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications
At least five (5) years of experience in road/highway maintenance experience, which must have included two (2) years as an official work lead over a maintenance crew.
Examples of road/highway maintenance experience: repairing potholes; performing asphalt or concrete paving operations; operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, motor graders, backhoes, front end loaders and other heavy equipment to repair and/or maintain roads; maintaining right-of-way fences; performing street striping and marking; performing mechanical mowing along the roadside (e.g. handheld weed eater up to a 15' rotary mower); performing bridge; roadside ditch and culvert cleaning and maintenance; installing and/or maintaining roadway signs or guardrail; operating mechanical sweepers; conducting traffic control; or performing mechanical snow removal (gator up to a tandem truck).
Examples of work lead experience: partially responsible for leading and mentoring at least two full-time employees in some or all of the following areas: giving input into performance goals and reviews, applying standard operating procedures, assigning tasks, prioritizing work, identifying and gathering resources to complete tasks, checking work product, dealing with emergencies, conducting safety checks. (Equivalent classifications are Highway Maintenance Worker II; Equipment Operator IV; Pipe/Mechanical Trades at a tunnel; and Structural Trades if working on bridge, traffic control, or roadwork at CDOT).

Conditions of Employment: The following conditions must be met and maintained in order to be employed and to continue employment at CDOT in this position, unless exempted by the Maintenance Superintendent or Traffic Program Engineer.
Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes that allows operation within Colorado.
If you have a non-Colorado Commercial Driver’s License, you must be eligible to drive in Colorado with your CDL at time of hire. If you currently live outside of Colorado and relocate to reside in Colorado, you must transfer your CDL to Colorado within 30 days of relocation.

May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e. drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider.
On-call work (rotating basis as well as subject to call)
Shift work
Essential Services Designation – Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes' driving time in normal weather conditions to be able to respond in a timely manner after being notified to report to work. Knowledge of an emergency or hazardous condition may be considered to be notification to report to workstation.
New employees are required to take two weeks of maintenance training, while veteran CDOT employees are required to take one week of training each year. This training is completed via computer or in Aurora.
May be required to obtain a Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months to 1 year as a condition of appointment.
Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays.
Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where you can be reached for the purposes of responding to an emergency.
