Team Gilbert has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated professional to fill the position of Solid Waste Operator III with a focus in Safety.

Solid Waste Operators report to the Solid Waster & Recycling Manager. This position will be responsible for the administration and ongoing activities of the Solid Waste and Recycling Safety Program. The position will provide policies, standard operating procedures and training to ensure the division is following the Town of Gilbert Safety Manual, OSHA regulations, ADOSH regulations, and other industry safety standards/best practices.

This position is responsible for promoting, coordinating, and implementing a variety of office and field activities associated with promoting safe work behaviors and conditions.

Ideal candidates will have good energy and enthusiasm, work well with co-workers, and customers and management team, be quick at solving problems independently and have a strong work ethic. Knowledge and skill required for success in this position is familiarity with the Town of Gilbert driving routes, a strong history of attendance and punctuality, record-keeping ability and attention to safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate safely in multiple lines of service; roll-off, rear, side and front-loading automated refuse vehicle collecting refuse on a designated route of apartments, office buildings, residential customers, commercial establishments or other sites of contained refuse and disposal sites.

  • Administer safety related training for new and existing operators, solid waste workers, and leadership.

  • Prepare records and reports as required.

  • Review accidents and incidents. Conduct root cause analysis and share findings with Peer Incident Review Team and leadership.

  • Serve as team safety trainer and mentor for assigned SWR team; Partner with assigned SWR leadership to effectively communicate department and Town-wide goals, objectives, and safety initiatives; Partner with SWR leadership to develop SOP's and best practice procedures.

  • Computer knowledge/training will be required to help assign work for Residential, Bulk, Commercial (front-load), Roll-Off and Container maintenance teams.

  • SWO IIIs will lead various teams, such as an internal accident/incident review.

  • Interpret and summarize Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations relating to CDL holders in the performance of safety-sensitive functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Associate degree or a 2 year Technical Certificate preferred, but not required.

  • 3 years of experience in heavy equipment operation, supplemented by vocational/technical training in heavy equipment and vehicle operation.

  • 1-2 years of increasing responsibilities in a lead or trainer capacity.

  • 2-3 years demonstrated track record of previous safety training experience.

  • 2 years in the solid waste industry.

  • 5 years of experience in safety or related area and necessary certifications.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:

Possess and maintain an Arizona Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and Medical Card. (May be given 6 months to obtain)

This position is an At-Will position and is FLSA Non-Exempt - eligible for overtime compensation.
