Chevron Corporation Electrical Reliability Engineer in Geismar, Louisiana

Chevron is accepting online applications for the position through July 30th, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. (CDT).

This position will be the Geismar facility instrument and electrical reliability engineer. This role is responsible for performing a variety of engineering duties, including reliability assessments and recommendations of electrical components, equipment, and processes. Supporting the design and maintenance of new electrical, instrumentation, control systems upgrades, continuous improvement of current production processes, and evaluation of new technologies. This position will serve as the Geismar facility technical expert in instrumentation and electrical infrastructure.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting general Facilities Engineering (FE) with Medium and Low voltage Electrical (I&E) reliability analysis.

  • Provide feedback to project design, construction, commissioning, teams in Chevron REG Geismar LA facility.

  • Support capital projects by determining electrical discipline scope of work and feasibility studies.

  • In general, gathers and examines basic reliability data from field studies or database and correlates the data for analysis using well-defined engineering techniques, principles, and procedures.

  • Initiates elemental engineering studies into equipment/process failures and presents analysis details to more experienced engineers for approval/feedback to gain in-depth experience and improve judgment for advancing to higher level jobs.

  • Leads complex power outages root cause analysis and leads corrective action to minimize EHS and Operational impact.

  • Creates turnaround electrical scope of work and seeks/monitors for operational windows of opportunity to implement electrical changes and improvements.

  • Participates and leads equipment criticality study of electrical and instrumentation equipment.

  • Leads implementation and performance of the site’s electrical PM program. Equipment includes transformers, switchgear, breakers, MV motors UPS, batteries, relays, HRGs, MCCs, etc.

  • This role will determine electrical acceptance criteria for first energization equipment readiness.

  • Liaison with engineers, operations, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering projects.

  • Implements electrical asset strategies to maximize equipment mechanical availability.

  • Leads electrical Management of Change (MOC) process to make performance and safety improvements.

  • This role will interface with the site’s utility provide to solve technical matters.

  • This role will brief site leadership on complex electrical and instrument topics to better understand problems, opportunities, and recommendations for improvement.

  • Participates in Chevron’s BIN to leverage corporation and other BUs best practices and lessons learned to improve Geismar OE and equipment performance.

  • Responsible for maintaining the site’s CMMS electrical asset information up to date and correct.

  • Champion’s site’s Electrical Safety program to ensure OE compliance.

  • Maintains and improve electrical and instrumentation systems and equipment.

  • Assist on failure mode and root cause analysis.

  • Provide daily support as needed to the Maintenance & Reliability Team

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: BS degree in an accredited 4 year bachelor’s degree program in electrical engineering or other discipline plus experience.

  • Experience Required: 5+ years’ experience in an engineering role in a manufacturing or chemical processing plant

  • Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio)

  • Knowledge of the NEC NFPA 70 / 70E

  • Demonstrate attention to detail

  • Experience using CMMS systems such as SAP, MAXIMO, JDE, etc.

  • Ability to read and interpret process flow sheets, P&IDs, specifications, and electrical drawings.

  • Knowledge of common production equipment such as centrifuges, reciprocating compressors, gearboxes, motors, electrical distribution systems, instrumentation systems and fixed equipment.

  • Knowledge of standard industrial safety procedures such as lock-out/tag-out, confined space entry, hot work permit, elevated work, blinding, isolations, purging, mobile equipment operation and permitting.

  • Advanced mathematical skill to calculate and interpret data using percentages, ratios, averages, and medians.

  • Ability to work independently as well as lead/participate on teams.

  • Self-starter who effectively manages multiple tasks under time and cost pressure; assigns appropriate priorities to competing interests; and achieves results with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: BS degree in an accredited 4 year bachelor’s degree program in electrical engineering

  • Experience: 8+ years of experience in a reliability or maintenance engineering role in a manufacturing or chemical processing plant.

  • Skills:

  • Excellent problem-solving skills

  • Project Management Skills

  • Infrared analysis, Motor Circuit Analysis

  • Communicate effectively with customers and co-workers (oral and written) to provide technical expertise as required

  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives schedules, manage costs and provide timely reliability recommendations in a fast-paced work environment.

  • Proven Knowledge in: Electrical Power Distribution Systems design, ETAP modeling. Power system analysis, including protective relaying, fast load shedding, etc. Including planning, operations, commissioning, start-up. and maintenance of medium voltage systems.

  • Proven Knowledge in Power management, load shed systems. Electrical equipment and electrical system integrity and reliability.

  • Proven knowledge in: Reviewing specifications and preparing datasheets for various power system components, MCCs, 500HP motors, and uninterruptible power systems (UPS).

  • Supporting design engineering during the development phase to ensure design meets safety, reliability, and derating performance targets.

  • Ability to perform Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), Failure Modes Effects Analyses (FMEA), Failure Modes Critical Effects Analyses (FMECA), and Fault Trees and performs Fault Tree Analyses (FTA)

  • Proven knowledge in: Identifying and analyzing reliability opportunities, design improvements and oversee implementation in coordination with Operations & Maintenance personnel.

  • Perform Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) reviews of critical or unreliable equipment.

  • Interprets schematics, references component datasheets, and performs circuit analysis and sensitivity analyses on digital, analog, and power designs.
