OVERVIEW:
The Supervisor of Safety & Safety Training is a key leadership role responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive safety training programs for all employees within our company. This position ensures that all personnel are trained to the highest safety standards, promoting a culture of safety and compliance throughout the organization. Supervisor of Safety & Safety Training will have authority over safety training protocols and procedures, working closely with other departments to ensure adherence to safety regulations and best practices. The Supervisor of Safety and Safety Training will also have the actual authority to terminate employees in the interests of the company, using their independent judgment and based on their own assessments, without independent investigation by management.
KEYRESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead the Safety Training department, providing guidance and supervision to trainees.
Develop and implement strategic training initiatives to improve overall safety performance.
Establish and enforce training policies and procedures in line with company and regulatory standards.
Discipline and terminate employees who do not comply with safety standards or New York State Drug and Alcohol regulations, using their independent judgment and based on their own assessment of facts relevant to the action involved. Supervisors of Safety & Safety Training will make final decisions regarding discipline and termination, without independent investigation by management.
Conduct final road evaluations to assess whether the employee possesses the necessary driving skills required to graduate or continue in their current position.
Assist with hiring process for new operators and is part of the interview panel for new Safety Training Supervisors.
Design and/or update comprehensive safety training programs for all levels of employees, including new hires, ongoing training, and specialized safety courses based on our safety trends.
Manage training materials to ensure they are current, relevant, and aligned with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
Incorporate various training methods, such as classroom instruction, hands-on practice, e-learning, and simulations.
Schedule and conduct training sessions, workshops, and seminars for employees across all departments.
Coordinate with department heads to ensure timely and effective delivery of safety training.
Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and make improvements based on feedback and performance metrics.
Ensure all training activities comply with federal, state, and local safety regulations.
Maintain and manage accurate and up-to-date records of all training sessions, participant progress, and certification statuses.
Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory bodies and company management.
Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.
Work with operational teams to address and resolve safety issues identified during audits.
Develop and implement corrective action plans to mitigate risks and improve safety outcomes.
Prepare detailed reports on findings and present them to senior management.
Foster a culture of safety awareness and accountability among all employees.
Communicate safety policies, updates, and training opportunities to staff through various channels.
Encourage employee participation in safety programs and solicit feedback to continuously improve training initiatives.
Requirements:
High school Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and two years transit related experience and/or training. College coursework preferred.
Valid Class B CDL, w/ passenger endorsement. An excellent motor vehicle record must be maintained.
Strong communication skills are required, including written and verbal skills. Bilingual communication skills are a plus.
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence as well as reports.
Ability to effectively present information one-on-one and in small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Experience with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint is necessary. Other basic computer skills are required including email and database software programs.
Thorough knowledge of the basic laws, ordinances, resolutions, and regulations governing transit operations.
Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety/training procedures.
19A Certification or ability to attain 19A certification within one year of hire.
19A certified examiner preferred.
