The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the state of Florida’s social services agency. Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center (NFETC) is a 216 bed, all male, forensic, mental health rehabilitation facility. The Center is located in northeast Gainesville, Florida on 639 picturesque acres with regular sightings of deer, turkey and other wildlife. NFETC employs a variety of entry level to leadership positions including food service, maintenance, direct care, nurses, counselors, rehab therapists, medical doctors, security, psychiatrists, and psychologists.

This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as Senior Physician Psychiatrist- SES. T his position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

This is a Select Exempt Service position practicing in a forensic mental health treatment center to evaluate men with mental disorders, manage their course of treatment, and help prepare them to confront their legal situation as described in Chapter 916, F.S. Position serves as the psychiatrist of record for a specific caseload of residents, the number determined by the need for an equitable distribution of the Center's total caseload among all the psychiatrists. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Participation in the Multidisciplinary Treatment Team for each resident, working collaboratively to develop and implement treatment plans.

  • Evaluate male patients with mental disorders, manage their course of treatment, and help prepare them to confront their legal situation as described in Chapter 916.

  • Completion of a psychiatric evaluation on every resident being admitted, initiating admission orders and developing a preliminary treatment plan.

  • Takes lead responsibility for prescribing and monitoring the use of psychotropic medications.

  • Works closely with the Clinic Physician, Dentist, and Health Care Coordinators to monitor the general health and dental needs of each resident.

  • Completes documentation for the Clinical Record in a timely manner, and works collaboratively to insure that Clinical Summaries meet statutory deadlines for submission to the courts.

  • Takes responsibility to see that required periodic psychiatric assessments are completed in a timely fashion.

  • Testifies in court as necessary.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:

    This position requires certification in CPR, First Aid, MANDT, Infection Control, Customer Service, and OSHA requirements. Intervention with combative individuals may be required. Some driving may be required. In addition, the following is required:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of program management and delivery of mental health services.

  • Knowledge of mental health, psychiatric principles, practices and techniques.

  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.

  • Ability to perform complete psychiatric and mental health assessments of patients.

  • Ability to manage mental health disorders and care of patients.

  • Ability to identify and evaluate illnesses and/or disorders.

  • Ability to compile and evaluate mental health assessments, medical histories and other clinical and laboratory data.

  • Ability to initiate diagnostic laboratory tests and evaluate the results.

  • Ability to prescribe/alter and administer appropriate medications for specific illnesses.

  • Ability to work with patients having a variety of mental psychiatric disorders and physical problems.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.

  • Ability to apply the consultative processes in problem-solving activities.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to develop and implement various program monitoring methodologies and techniques.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Licensure as a physician pursuant to Chapter 458, Florida Statutes, and two years of post-licensure professional experience in the practice of medicine;

  • A current public psychiatry certificate issued by the Florida Board of Medical Examiners pursuant to Section 458.3165, Florida Statutes.

  • Certification by a recognized board in a medical specialty area can substitute for the required experience.
