Job Description:

The African American Studies Program at the University of Florida is conducting a search for the Dr. Patricia Hillard Nunn Visiting Assistant Professor of African American Studies, beginning August 16, 2024. This is a full-time, nine-month, time-limited, non-tenure-accruing position with a possibility of a one-year renewal for the 2024-25 academic year subject to availability of funds and satisfactory performance. Dr. Hilliard Nunn served as a senior lecturer in the African American Studies Program and was a leader in African American community engagement in the Greater Gainesville Community.

The candidate is expected to contribute to the research, teaching, and service missions of the African American Studies Program and will have a 100% appointment in the program. The expected teaching assignment is two courses per semester. The applicant should be prepared to teach one of our required courses – Introduction to African American Studies and/or Key Issues in Black Atlantic Thought. Applicants should also be prepared to teach online. Applicants should also have an active research agenda and a desire to contribute to the scholarly development of the program.The area of specialty is open and broadly defined. Areas of interest include but are not limited to racial health inequities, carceral studies, urban studies, policy studies, or racial Blackness outside the U.S.

Established in 1969, the interdisciplinary African American Studies Program offers a major and minor with a diverse array of courses. The program recently hired new faculty with research interests in Black women's and motherhood studies, Black medical history, Black veterans’ history, transatlantic literature, the history of hip hop, slavery and girlhood studies, the middle passage, and race and sports. We are also one of the programs participating in the University of Florida's AI initiative, offering courses in race and technology and AI and social movements. Minimum Requirements:

Candidates should have their Ph.D. in hand at the time of hiring.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. in African American Studies or in a related field is preferred.
