Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic Senior Director of Scientific Publications with a focus on Oncology to lead our scientific publication team. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of oncology research, publications strategy, and a proven track record of successfully leading cross-functional teams in the development and execution of publication plans across the oncology product lifecycle. The Senior Director will play a critical role in shaping the scientific narrative and disseminating data to key stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, researchers, and regulatory agencies. This position is located at our Headquarters in Foster City, CA.

Senior Director Scientific Publications responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the team of Global Publication Leads (GPLs) and Publication Specialists (PSs) responsible for working within specific oncology disease areas or drug classes to align and build an integrated publication strategy and plans for global clinical studies from Phase I (in humans studies) and non-clinical trial sources including HEOR, Epidemiology, RWE, and Payer so that the integrated publication strategy is consistently applied across all study designs, and clear and supportable scientific data are communicated to internal partners and external customers (regulatory authorities, payers, physicians and patients)

  • Provide leadership and guidance to internal partners during development of product/TA strategic plans and processes.

  • Development and delivery of the integrated Global publication strategy

  • Strong leadership and management skill, with the ability to develop a high-performing team in a matrixed environment.

  • Advocate for publications teams through building effective relationships with key stakeholders across the Gilead Oncology organization.

  • Provide visible leadership support to GPLs/PSs working in alliances and with joint venture partners and to key alliance partners, ensuring the right scientific and technical skills and capabilities from Publications and driving effective behaviors lead alliance relationships to support the success of strategic alliances.

  • Develop best practices within oncology publications to streamline communications and workstream development to support Gilead’s presence at global oncology congresses.

  • Keep up to date with any internal or external developments that potentially impact on publications; disseminate information and develop strategies for meeting new requirements.

  • Participate in Gilead leadership teams and serve as an advocate for Oncology publications.

Additional responsibilities include the following:

  • Understand the evolving publications landscape through engagement with and participation in professional societies (e.g., ISMPP)

  • Attend key scientific congresses and meetings for the TA to ensure the accurate and appropriate Represent Gilead in relevant professional bodies and conferences as an advocate for compliance and publication practice presentation of Gilead scientific evidence.

  • Travel as required (up to 20%)

Educational Requirements

Doctorate (Ph.D., MD, PharmD) and 12 years of publication planning, writing, medical affairs, medical communications, clinical or medical information experience or Master’s degree and 14 years of publication planning, writing, medical affairs, medical communications, clinical or medical information experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Therapeutic area experience is required

  • CMPP certification preferred

  • Clear understanding of current publication environment, good publication practices, Sunshine Act/Pharma Code of Conduct, ICMJE, GPP4, and other global guidelines related to publications, scientific data communication, and transparency standards.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills (written, verbal, and presentation) and organizational, time management, and project management/planning skills

  • Experience leading critical functional or cross-functional initiatives

The salary range for this position is: $255,425.00 - $330,550.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
