Purpose

The Senior Paralegal helps the Staff Attorney prepare the immigration case files, including compiling application packets by completing required accompanying documents. The position will also help with translation and interpretation, coordinating workshops, clinics, legal appointments, and engaging in outreach in the community.

Responsibilities

Assist attorneys with case preparation by filling out immigration forms, drafting immigration applications and petitions, gathering and organizing supporting evidence. Demonstrate strong attention to detail and accuracy. Maintain calendar with important deadlines and manage timely filings.

Conduct intake interviews with clients and assist attorneys with client consultations. Support the Staff Attorney with legal analysis for each applicant to determine eligibility for desired immigration benefit and services.

Assist clients in completing their immigration applications, including, but not limited to employment authorization (I-765); permanent residence (I-485); asylum (I-589); parole renewal (I-131); citizenship (N-400). Spot potential problems and issues in each instance that may prevent applicant from receiving desired benefit. Identify potential solutions for identified issues and problems.

Properly manage client appointments and professional duties to ensure thorough and professional representation of client interests. Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills to ensure proper communication with clients, agency personnel, and other parties.

Develop and maintain accurate case lists and manage case files. Conduct appropriate file review to ensure that all case files are maintained appropriately as it pertains to professional service delivery.

Update job knowledge by participating in continuing educational opportunities. Participate in training and courses as needed to obtain partial or full DOJ accreditation.

Represent CWS/IRP at community-based organization meetings related to immigration issues. Coordinate and plan outreach activities to achieve program goals.

Perform other related duties and special projects, as requested by the Office Director and attorneys.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience. Paralegal qualifications or law degree required.

Experience:

Previous work experience with asylum seekers, refugees, asylees, and immigrant entrants required

Other Skills:

Bilingual applicants preferred (Spanish, Ukrainian, Dari, Russian) Strong computer literacy with knowledge of word processing and database applications. Ability to use standard office equipment in performing varied activities. Strong attention to detail Ability to work as part of a team.
