Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The mission of Laboratory Animal Resources ( LAR ) is to use our expertise to provide the highest standard of care for laboratory animals in support of the Colorado State University research community. These positions fulfill a vital role in the administration of LAR to carry out this mission. CSU LAR manages over 48,000 ft. of AAALAC accredited research animal facilities on three campuses, including Main Campus, South Campus, and Foothills Campus. Research and teaching activities supported by LAR include infectious disease research, including ABSL work using select agents, cancer biology, hibernation, nutrition, and metabolism studies, orthopedic research, therapeutics, toxicology and teaching activities to support a diverse program of learning. LAR exists to provide state of the art care and support for the animal models component of these studies.

Position Summary

This position will focus on livestock animal care, in particular horses and sheep. Duties may include:

  • Daily animal care

  • Monitoring health, census, environmental parameters, and biosecurity measures associated with research animal management, and problem solving when variations in these measurements are not within acceptable standards

  • Coordinating & advising on equipment and disposable supply needs for maintenance of animal health and in accordance with SOP’s

  • Coordinating, advising on medical and/or research procedures with LAR veterinarians and investigators

  • Attending investigator staff meetings when appropriate to be apprised of ongoing studies

  • Training other LAR or investigator staff in animal husbandry procedures

  • Other duties as required.

Animal husbandry work is physical, and entails standing, bending, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds, and repetitive motions. Staff work in various environments including outdoors, close quarters, increased heat and humidity and dusty surroundings. Some of the research at CSU involves infectious diseases. We ensure biosecurity and the safety of our staff by requiring personal protective equipment (such as respirators and Tyvek suits), tuberculosis testing, vaccinations, and showering. CSU has a large variety of animal species, and applicants must be willing and able to work with all types of animals.

As the team lead, this position will also assist the supervisor with scheduling, delegating, monitoring work quality, and mentoring animal care technicians.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 6 months of professional experience working with large animals such as horses, sheep, cattle.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and pass an annual motor vehicle check to drive department owned vehicles.

  • Experience handling horses.

  • Experience with generating and maintaining records such as medical, inventory, maintenance logs, etc.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • AALAS certification ( ALAT , LAT or LATg).

  • A degree in a related field such as animal sciences, veterinary technology, zoology, etc.

  • Leadership experience such as delegating tasks, scheduling activities of others, giving feedback.

  • Experience training staff, teaching others how to work with animals.

  • These duties are performed as outlined in the LAR animal care SOPs as appropriate for the given species and research/teaching application.

  • Perform daily animal welfare checks to assess animal behavior and wellbeing.

  • Perform routine husbandry including providing appropriate feed and water and housing conditions.

  • Prepare and stock animal rooms with feed, water and other supplies as directed, and in particular for weekend coverage.

  • Identify and report any abnormalities to the veterinary staff or investigators staff for disposition.

  • Assist in treatments as directed by the veterinary staff.

  • Perform routine procedures such as weighing animals, nail/hoof trims, etc.

  • Euthanize or assist in euthanizing animals as directed.

  • Maintain appropriate feed and inventory logs to track regular usage and to assure feed is used within the appropriate amount of time to ensure freshness. Complete records as needed for various assurances to animal welfare regulatory agencies the IACUC , Good Laboratory Practices.

  • Maintain appropriate communications with investigators, and LAR personnel.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Perform room/stall environment checks daily including recording temperature and humidity, overall room condition, and room/stall sanitation. Using the appropriate disinfectants and cleaning agents, disinfect and sanitize in and around animal holding areas and prior to receipt of animals on a scheduled basis.

  • Perform quality assurance standards to assess adequacy of disinfectants. Work with sterilized equipment taking precautions to avoid cross contamination.

  • Schedule animal care activities. Work with the supervisor to ensure that all required tasks are scheduled and communicated via room calendars and the assignment white board.

  • Coordinate supply movement between facilities.

  • Monitor quality of work of animal care technicians to assure tasks are completed to conform to LAR standard operating procedures and federal regulations and guidelines. Provide constructive feedback to staff.

  • Train animal care technicians to perform their job duties

  • Provide needed leadership when the supervisor is absent including rearranging schedules, delegating tasks, and communicating with LAR managers.
