Position Summary

This position will work as a Registered Veterinary Technician for the Small Animal Internal Medicine department. The position will perform diagnostic procedures, therapeutic treatments, assist with advanced endoscopic procedures, play an active role in our I-131 service, and provide instruction to veterinary students, interns, and residents. The small animal internal medicine service specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases and conditions that affect the internal organs of small animals. This often includes complex or chronic illnesses that aren’t easily managed through routine veterinary care. Here’s an overview of the what typically occurs on the small animal internal medicine service: Diagnosis of complex conditions, management of chronic diseases, specialized treatments, and help in monitoring the progression of diseases and adjusting treatments as necessary to improve the quality of life for the pet.

Required Job Qualifications

  • ​An Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology.

  • Registered as a Veterinary Technician ( RVT ) or Provisional Veterinary Technician ( PVT ) through the Department of Regulatory Agencies ( DORA ) by the time of hire.

  • Credentialed in the State of Colorado or other eligible state determined by CACVT

    NOTE : VETERINARY PRACTICE ACT – Effective January 1, 2024, anyone wanting to use the titles Registered Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Technician, RVT , or VT will have to be certified through the Colorado Association of Certified Veterinary Technicians ( CACVT ) and registered through the Department of Regulatory Agencies ( DORA ). Preferred Job Qualifications

  • ​At least one year working as a veterinary technician.

  • ​Experience in IV catheter placement, venipuncture, cystocentesis, endoscopy, teaching, computer skills, scheduling appointments, and answering client questions.

Duty/Responsibility

  • This position provides patient care and performs minor medical and surgical techniques on veterinary patients such as venipuncture, IV catheterization, fluid administration, urinary catheterization, abdominocentesis, fluid and blood administration, and advanced procedures for therapeutic management and diagnostic sample submission.

  • Administration and monitoring of IV anesthetics in patients undergoing medical and surgical procedures.

  • Anticipates or take measures to prevent problems or complicationsin the patients they are involved with.

  • Monitors the patients in the medical wards.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Assist in the performance of fiber-optic procedures such as laparoscopy, endoscopy, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy and cystoscopy.

  • Operates biopsy instruments and obtains biopsy samples.

  • Maintenance, use and inspection of fiber-optic instruments and equipment involved in endoscopic procedures. Cleans, stores, and sterilizes fragile fiber optic equipment. Retrieves foreign bodies via endoscopy.

  • Scheduling and coordination of anesthesia/equipment/rooms and supplies for the small animal medicine department to assure that procedures are accomplished in a timely and orderly manner.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Receive phone calls from clients seeking information and/or second opinions for their pets. Return phone calls and give information regarding CSU standards of care, fee estimates, and determines if the patient is an emergency or not.

  • Schedules ultrasound appointments if indicated for the particular patient. Seeks approval from faculty if the position thinks the patients should be seen earlier than the medicine schedule will allow.

  • Directs clients toward resolution of problems, receives lab work for CSU patients, ensures clients are scheduled properly, and handles potential emergencies.

  • Monitors the Internal Medicine Prescription Line and Techline.

  • Assists in prescription refill requests, medication instructions, appointment requests and other general information for clients.

  • Interviews clients and obtains history and basic physical exam parameters in preparation for further assessment by DVMs.

  • Follow up with clients regarding concerns about patients or care plans.

  • Greets client/patient prior to taking patient to treatment area to collect and process requested diagnostics.

  • Enters lab orders and charges into computer.

  • Instruction of PVM students, interns, hourly assistants and newer technicians in the technical aspects of the above mentioned techniques in formal labs and on a patient demand basis.

Job Duty CategoryI-131 Hyperthyroid Cat Care and Radiation Administration

Duty/Responsibility

  • This position has all radiation modules required to inject I-131 cats. Radiation modules include Mod 0, 1, 2, 4, 5, and 8 and require both a shoulder and ring dosimetry badge.

  • The position plays a lead role on mornings when hyperthyroid cats present for I-131 treatment.

  • The position will either inject or hold for injection and begin the daily log sheets.

  • This position will also provide patient care to the cats twice daily, keep the clinician and student informed with daily updates and follow all safety protocols.

  • This position will also perform sedation for hyperthyroid cats receiving thyroid scans as needed.

Duty/Responsibility

  • This position is responsible for stocking most exam rooms for the hospital.

  • This position will monitor exam rooms at least weekly to ensure all medical items and pet treats are well stocked for daily use by all services.

  • Some examples of items to be stocked by this position include exam gloves, syringes, needles, slides, gauze, blood collection tubes, medical tape, thermometer covers, lubricating jelly, and pet treats.

  • Sharps containers will be monitored. Items not being stocked by this position include cleaning products or office supplies, such as paper towels, disinfectant spray, tissues, hand soap, markers, erasers, pens, etc…

Job Duty CategoryMaintain Clean Work Environment

Duty/Responsibility

  • This position will be responsible for maintaining a clean working environment for SAIM students, staff and faculty in areas not maintained by the Animal Care Cleaning Team.

  • This includes emptying trash and recycling containers, cleaning and decluttering countertops and workspaces, ensuring dishes are clean or thrown away in the sinks and refrigerators, and sweeping and mopping floors in the SAIM rounds rooms and technician’s office.
