Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities.

The Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University is a large academic and research department in the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering. We currently have nineteen faculty members, eighty graduate students, over seventy full-time researchers and postdoctoral fellows, and an outstanding and dedicated support staff, that comprise one of the most research-active units at the university that is nationally ranked near the top of its field.

The research team led by Professor Jeff Pierce conducts cutting-edge research on atmospheric air pollution. The research group models, satellites, and in situ measurements to study problems that include pollution exposure, pollution health effects, atmospheric chemistry, aerosol physics, and aerosol climate effects.

Position Summary

The project is a collaboration with Agricultural Economists, Alex Maas at University of Idaho and Jude Bayham at Colorado State University, to understand how changes in agricultural land use affects fine and coarse particulate matter (PM) in the US. The hired postdoc will assess spatially and temporal changes in fine and coarse PM methods for coarse PM using surface-based monitors, models, and satellites. The postdoc will also work closely with the economists on connecting the PM data to agricultural activity. The expected end results are formal publications disseminated in the peer-reviewed science literature and at scientific conferences. This position will report to Professor Jeff Pierce.

Required Job Qualifications

  • PhD from an accredited college or university in Atmospheric Sciences or related field.

  • Three or more years of graduate research experience conducting independent scientific research in the topic area related to air pollution.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Expertise in analysis of satellite data.

  • Expertise in analysis ground-monitor data.

  • Expertise in analysis of chemical-transport model output.

  • Expertise in statistical methods to combine data sources.

  • Background in atmospheric aerosol sources, sinks, and transport.
