Description of Work Unit

The Department of Biomedical Sciences ( BMS ) in the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences ( CVMBS ) is a major locus for biomedical education including undergraduate, graduate, veterinary and post-doctoral training and for translational biomedical research at Colorado State University. BMS houses more than 30 research laboratories. Faculty members’ interests run the gamut from human and animal anatomy and neuroanatomy, reproductive biology and endocrinology to molecular neuroscience and cardiovascular physiology.

Position Summary

BMS is seeking a full-time DVM Anatomy Laboratory Coordinator to oversee the new DVM anatomy teaching collection and launch of the new DVM curriculum. This position will work with existing BMS anatomy teams and faculty to support the CVMBS teaching mission, including being a liaison with multiple Veterinary Health System ( VHS ) partners including Clinical Sciences faculty. This person will serve as a Coordinator for the new DVM Veterinary Health and Education Complex ( VHEC ) wet-lab and associated areas. They will support delivery of the current DVM curriculum and will be integral for the development and launch of the new curriculum.

This person will develop specimen preservation methods for a formaldehyde free anatomy program and assess DVM teaching needs to ensure that specimens and teaching methods are prepared for the new curriculum and teaching space launch in Fall 2026. Specifically, this person will be preparing traditional and innovative teaching specimens, preparing teaching spaces, coordinating animal anatomy needs, and serving as the point of contact for the DVM Anatomy teaching team. This position is not expected to teach but will work with the animal anatomy teaching teams within BMS and the Veterinary Health System to facilitate animal anatomy and professional education across programs. This position will supervise and train student hourliesto work with anatomy teaching teams and program staff to facilitate management of anatomy facilities and resources. The applicant should be responsible and able to work in a team environment.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by the time of hire; the Biomedical Sciences department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in pathology, anatomy, biomedical sciences, zoology, biology, or related field and one year of laboratory-based experience are required. A Master’s degree in the sciences may substitute for the BS and experience.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong organizational and scheduling skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook365, as well as Adobe.

  • Working knowledge of domestic animal anatomy as demonstrated by coursework or work experience.

  • Experience with commonly used gross anatomy preservation and embalming methods.

  • This position requires the ability to lift 50lbs and become immunized against tetanus and rabies virus (cost covered by employer) or any other personal protective efforts as required by the Environmental Health Safety team.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience performing dissection is preferred.

  • Demonstrated leadership role in a laboratory or teaching laboratory setting.

  • Experience with osteological articulation, plastination, 3-D printing, silicone models, and special specimen assembly.

  • Basic carpentry skills and competency with power tools.

  • Understanding of teaching and teaching needs, preferably in a laboratory setting, demonstrated either through teaching or supporting teaching as a coordinator or teaching assistant

Essential Duties

Duty/Responsibility

  • Devising and maintaining the methods, procedures, protocols, and specimens used in the new DVM anatomy teaching facilities.

  • Managing and tracking established operating budgets including ordering equipment and supplies used in the DVM teaching space;

  • Collaborating with CVMBS and CSU Operations and Management for: IACUC and USDA inspections, AVMA accreditation policies, OSHA , and WELL certifications.

  • Overseeing the purchase and disposal of hazardous wastes used by the VHEC wet-lab teaching space

  • Managing the anatomy teaching equipment in the new VHEC animal anatomy programs

  • Oversee the hiring, training, and supervision of 2-5 work study students per year in the new DVM lab space who will assist with preparation of cadavers, maintenance, management, and custodial service of new animal anatomy/wet laboratory spaces, equipment and supplies involved in the teaching of the laboratory classes and maintenance of DVM space;

  • Develop and maintain the VHEC anatomical collection for the new DVM curriculum, including bone boxes and requests for use of collection specimens. Support DVM faculty and teaching programs with development of new or replacement specimens.

  • Manage DVM cadaveric resources:

  • Develop formaldehyde free embalming methods or specimen preservation techniques for DVM curriculum

  • Coordinate wet lab specimen set up/clean up with VTH technicians in the new Wet lab space

  • Coordinate with BMS / VHS programs to determine and organize efficient use of specimens and their disposal

  • Manage VHEC anatomical specimen organization and storage
