Description of Work Unit

Colorado State University recently launchedAgNext (https://agnext.colostate.edu/) ,a first-of-its-kind collaborative, to support profitable, sustainable, and healthy livestock production. AgNext is a leader for research in animal and ecosystem health while enhancing profitability of the supply chain and serves as the crossroads for producers, industry partners, and researchers to come together to innovate real time solutions for sustainability animal agriculture. Our research focuses on advancing the science of animal agriculture to ensure a continued safe, secure, and nutritious food supply. Our mission is to identify and scale innovation that fosters the health of animals and ecosystems to promote profitable industries that support vibrant communities.

The AgNext program is focused on education, research, and outreach to solve the world’s most pressing food production issues and crucial matters about Earth, its ecosystems, and their services in the context of livestock production systems. Our faculty and staff apply research-based solutions to benefit Colorado and the world. We offer academic programs to prepare students to address livestock production, sustainability, and environmental quality challenges such as waste management, water quality, and improvement of degraded lands. There are numerous opportunities for students to be involved in cutting edge research related to livestock production and ecosystem function and protection.

AgNext was formed to support breakthrough research and development of new technologies for promoting sustainability and resilience of livestock production systems. AgNext’s goals include providing end-to-end discovery and implementation of innovative sustainability solutions, including the testing/development of new methane mitigation technologies, accurate low-cost quantification systems, market analysis and policy design, education, extension and producer training to spur adoption of best practices. We established AgNext to leverage the unique expertise and leadership of researchers across CSU to overcome implementation barriers and bring sustainable livestock solutions to scale.

Position Summary

AgNext is recruiting a lead modeler to manage the distribution and curation of models, data, and decision support tools. This position will oversee code development and database management and lead customer discovery and outreach activities with consortium members. Responsibilities will include:

  • Development and support of modeling infrastructure and web resources

  • Generating and maintaining professional documentation (high quality, up to date)

  • Oversight of programming and data management efforts

  • Oversight of daily operation of web-based services

  • Model review and certification process

  • Support hosting models and datasets from other researchers and managing access

Required Job Qualifications

  • B.S./B.A. degree + 5 years related experienceorMaster’s degree + 2 years’ experienceorPhD.

  • Advanced command of the R and Python programming languages and version control with Git

  • Experience in translating subject matter expertise into biophysical models

  • Supervisory experience

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; Animal Sciences will not provide visa sponsorship for this position

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience and/or excitement to work in large collaborative community

  • Leadership experience onboarding people to complex coding projects

  • Experience with collaborative code development and maintaining model documentation and version control

  • Experience with database software systems and working with large, distributed data sets

  • Experience developing, modifying, and coding systems for dynamic models

  • Experience teaching or training new model users

  • Experience working with APIs
