U.S. Army Sustainment Command Conductor in Fort Carson, Colorado

Summary About the Position: This position is located in the Transportation Division, 407th Army Field Support Brigade, Fort Carson, CO. Responsibilities Serves as crew member in charge, the Conductor performs duties as crewmember of a depot train crew. Ensures that braker/switchers are properly placed and follow pertinent regulations, instructions, and requirements. Observes all railroad traffic and safety laws. Implement procedures for special handling of cargo under a variety of conditions. Perform the duties of a Breaker-Switcher. Direct the safe makeup and operation of a 120-ton diesel-electric locomotive. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Conductor without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties as a Conductor. I can perform train operation duties to include maintaining records of shipments, coordinating train make up, and utilize proper signals for railroads. I check written requirements for instructions pertaining to a variety of train equipment that is required to move the train. I make emergency repairs to equipment so that the train works efficiently. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Related to Mobile Equipment Operation) Ability to Operate Safely (Non-motor Vehicles) Operation of Motor Vehicles Reliability and Dependability Work Practices (Including Keeping Things Neat, Clean, and in Order) PHYSICAL EFFORT: Job requires frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, stretching, reaching and ability to concentrate for extended periods while serving as conductor, locomotive engineer or brakeman. Exerts considerable effort while operating switches, hand brakes and coupling devices, and while walking to perform tasks. Uses good eye-hand coordination to manipulate locomotive controls while moving in cab for best visibility. Uses visual acuity and depth perception to position locomotive and railcars. May lift and carry items weighing up to 45 lbs. frequently over railroad ties and ballast. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed around the locomotive, railcars, roadbed, tracks and when loading or unloading equipment. Frequently is exposed to adverse weather conditions or extreme temperatures; expose to fumes, dust and odors from diesel exhaust and treated ties, noise from operating locomotive and horn. Subject to possible serious injury or death from train derailment; from falling while boarding, walking, standing, or railcar movements; while walking on ties, or loose roadbeds; coupling or uncoupling and air-line devices. Personal protective equipment will be worn at all times during exposure to hazardous conditions while working as a conductor, brakeman or locomotive engineer. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
