Performs and coordinates highly advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and complex contract maintenance inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.Essential Duties:Assists Area Engineer in planning and coordinating Area Office operations.Consults with contractors' superintendent on work progress and maintenance problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.Oversees complex maintenance and spot improvement contracts and total maintenance, performance based, and bundled bid contracts.Serves as project leader responsible for construction inspection activities for large and complex construction projects or for multiple district construction projects.Administers construction and bridge inspection record-keeping activities in a District Area Office.Reviews and coordinates with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, supplemental agreements, extra work orders and revised estimates of quantities.Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.Monitors bridge inspection consultant activities and assists with coding as needed.Performs detail design and quantity checks for plans, specifications, and estimate (PSE).Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
